Taika Waititi is set to direct and co-write a new Star Wars film with 1917 scribe Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

On Monday, Disney made the announcement and confirmed that a new untitled Star Wars TV series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland is still in the works at Disney Plus.

Back in January, it was rumored that Waiiti was developing a Star Wars movie after he directed the season finale of the Disney+Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

When Variety asked Waititi if he was developing a Star Wars movie in February he said, “Are there discussions about the ‘Star Wars’ film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool ‘Star Wars’ was. I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with ‘Star Wars,’ and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f—ing love to.…If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

But, it’s still unclear if this film will be one of Disney’s three untitled Star Wars films that are supposed to be released December 2022, 2024, and 2026, or if this is a separate project.

This movie will be the first official Star Wars feature film to be confirmed after Games of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss walked away from their deal to make a series of Star Wars movies last October.

The first teaser for Star Wars: Episode IX reveals the title of this highly-anticipated sci-fi blockbuster, but that’s not the only amazing hint it dropped. Take a look at three best moments that became a topic of hot debate in the “Star Wars” community.

Which Skywalker?

The title, ‘The Rise of Skywalker’, gave us more questions than answers since we have no clue who is the titular Skywalker. Is Rey related to Luke after all? Is Kylo Ren going back to the light side and embracing his heritage? Is Skywalker just an entity and not a single person? We’ll know on December 20!

Lando is Back!

The Rise of Skywalker will bring back several fan favorites, including the amazing Lando Calrissian. The first teaser shows him flying the Millennium Falcon alongside Chewie, and it’s obvious they’re having the time of their life.

Emperor Returns

The evil laugh at the end of the trailer didn’t leave fans of this franchise puzzled. They immediately figured out it actually belongs to Emperor Palpatine, suggesting he’ll make a comeback in The Rise of Skywalker.

We’re yet to find out how, since we saw him die at the hands of Darth Vader, but as a voiceover in this trailer suggests – “No one’s ever really gone.”

In sci-fi movies, robots are either trying to take over the world or are being so darn cute that we can’t help but fall in love with them, even if it’s against our best interest. Robots aren’t supposed to feel emotion but these ten robots deserve credit for their fantastic personalities.

Marvin the Paranoid Android (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)

Marvin the Paranoid Android is one of the best characters in the film. Radiohead must have thought so too, because they wrote one of their biggest hits about him.

Nexus-6 Pris (Blade Runner)

The blond and gothy Pris from Scott Ridley’s original Blade Runner is cool, badass and well, lethal.

Ultron (Avengers: Age of Ultron)

The deadly robot Ultron in the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes quite the villain.

Bender (Futurama)

Bender has a terrible attitude, but he is hilarious, so we’ll let him on the list.

Wall-E (Wall-E)

Wall-E has got to be the most lovable robot (who doesn’t really say anything) of all time. And he saved the human race, so that’s good too.

Terminator (Terminator)

Terminator is one of the most awesome looking robots we can think of.

Data (Star Trek)

Does Data feel love?

Bumblebee (Transformers)

The Transformers franchise went downhill pretty rapidly, but Bumblebee still remains one of our top bots.

R2-D2 and C3PO (Star Wars)

Well, obviously.

K-9 (Doctor Who)

The only thing in sci-fi better than a friendly robot, is a friendly robot dog.

We finally have some details about the highly anticipated Star Wars live-action TV series that will be part of Disney’s upcoming streaming service.

Jon Favreau, who will write and produced the series, recently went on his Instagram profile to reveal that the show’s official title will be The Mandalorian, while also giving us a glimpse of its story.

“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic,” Favreau shared.

There are no indications about the possible premiere date for this Star Wars live-action TV series or any further info, which isn’t such a surprise given the fact that Disney’s streaming service will only launch in late 2019.

But fans are hoping that Jon Favreau will do an excellent job once the project kicks off since the 51-year-old actor and director already has experience of working within the Star Wars universe. Favreau previously voiced the character of Pre Vizsla in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, while also having a role in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.

It is important to note that Favreau’s show won’t be the only Star Wars live-action TV show on Disney’s streaming service, since the studio is reportedly working on several more similar projects.

We hate to say it, but Solo: A Star Wars Story has officially flopped, making it the first Star Wars film to ever make a loss in its second week at the box office.

The feature fell short of its projected North American opening targets by roughly $30 million. Then on its second week, it fell short of $30 million in earnings, 65% less than its opening weekend.
The origin story is the most expensive Star Wars movie to be made, at $250 million. So far, however, it has only made $264 million worldwide. This might not seem that bad but The Last Jedi and Rogue One both exceeded the $1 billion mark and Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens made a record breaking $2 billion. By Disney standards, Solo has seriously flopped. The question everyone is asking is, why?
Disney chief David Hollis seems to think it was a strategical error releasing the movie at the same time as Avengers: Infinity War. “There’s a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies. Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period?” he told the Hollywood Reporter.
Others are suggesting that people just don’t care enough about Hans Solo to pay to see his backstory. Keeping up with the Star Wars movies is difficult with a new film coming out every year. It’s possible that viewers have become apathetic and just aren’t invested enough to see Hans Solo in his own movie, being played by someone other than Harrison Ford.
What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Solo: A Star Wars Story yielded disappointing numbers for its opening at the box office.

The Ron Howard-directed Star Wars prequel follows a younger version of Harrison Ford’s Han Solo played by Alden Ehrenreich. Solo joins a gang of galactic smugglers, including our favorite Wookie, Chewbacca, and the adventure kicks off from there.

The prequel, however, has not met Disney’s estimates at the box office. It opened in third place in China behind Avengers: Infinity War and How Long Will I Love U. It earned short of $10 million, according to local data service Ent Group.

The movie was expected to fair better in North America, but rather than taking the expected $130-150 million, it unfortunately took in only $103 million.

The disappointing numbers have caused Disney distribution chief, Dave Hollis, to question their strategy. He has questioned whether it was wise to release the prequel while Marvel’s popular hits Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War are still showing in theaters.

Hollis told The Hollywood Reporter: “There’s a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies. Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period?”

Hollis indicated that regardless of successful international box office returns, Solo has disappointed, having a worldwide total of a modest $148 million compared to The Last Jedi, which opened with a more impressive $230 million.

We undoubtedly love our movie heroes, but there are some movie villains that just make us love them although they are doing awful things. The villains in the movies often have some background story which makes us admit that they are right, makes us sympathize with them, but on the other side, they are often scary and creepy. Sometimes the villains even steal the show from the main protagonist, leaving you in mesmerized by their characters. Today we brought you a list of the top 10 best movie villains to tell you our favorites. If you think we missed some, don’t hesitate to tell us.

10. Jack Torrance – The Shining

Played by Jack Nicholson, Jack Torrance is a suburban husband and father, but also The Overlook Hotel’s winter caretaker. Another side of his personality is that he is a psycho and murder and the king of creepy.

9. Norman Bates – Psycho

At first glance, he seems like a nice motelier, mama’s boy, but once the mask is pulled away we can see that it’s only madness beneath it. The famous Psycho scene of the shower curtain ripping, screeching sound and a knife lurching is iconic and it’s all thanks to Hitchcock’s brilliant creation of this man – Norman Bates (played by Anthony Perkins).

8. Hannibal Lecter – The Silence of the Lambs

The iconic performance of Anthony Hopkins showed how effective a villain can be when presented as calm, intelligent but terrifying. Hannibal is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, he is a charming man of high taste. Too bad that taste is in the human brains.

7. Agent Smith – Matrix

Black suit, dark sunglasses and an emotionless face on this man have the one and only purpose: to stop the rebellion. Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) is just an Al program in a virtual reality, designed as a human-hating weapon in the ultimate Man vs. Machines war.

6. Jigsaw Killer – Saw

Portrayed by Tobin Bell, Jigsaw is a cruel character who tests the other’s willingness to live through a psychopathic set of games. His victims seem like they don’t appreciate the life as much as they should, so he puts them into traps where they need to fight for their bare life. Do you want to play a game?

5. Loki – The Avengers

This supervillain has it all: a life story where he was kidnapped and raised by the god, he feels betrayed and he thinks he is doing good. While his brother Thor got the muscles and strength, Loki (Thomas Hiddleston) got the brains. He is charismatic, exciting, witty and keeps Marvel fans to want only more of him on the big screen.

4. Magneto – X-Men

Erik Magnus Lehnsherr (played by Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender) is cruel, violent and dangerous, but if you know the story of how his parents were killed in the holocaust and he had to survive by himself as a mutant chased by humans, maybe his idea of how two sapient species can’t live in the same world doesn’t sound so bad. He is so persuasive that you can hardly help yourself not to stand on his side.

3. Lord Voldemort – Harry Potter

Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) was born as Tom Marvolo Riddle and he is the most powerful Dark Wizard, so powerful that he was just one step away from conquering the wizarding world before Harry Potter stopped him. From the beginning to the end of the franchise, Voldemort embodied the perfect evil, he is so cruel that no-one dares to say his name, except his biggest enemy – Harry Potter.

2. Darth Vader – Star Wars

This iconic villain is the face of Star Wars. He was born in slavery, he joined the Jedi Order that made him one of the most powerful Jedi ever, but turned to the dark side of the force. He was supposed to be the chosen one, but he used his powers to destroy every Jedi alive. Among the fans of the franchise, he became even more popular than the heroes in the Star Wars universe, so there is no wonder he is one of the best movie villains ever.

1. The Joker – Batman: The Dark Knight

Casting Heath Ledger as one of the biggest Batman’s enemy got so much disapproval from the fans, but Ledger proved them wrong. He brought a new life to the Joker, making him maniacal and twisted psychopath, purely cruel, dangerous supervillain. Ledger’s performance was the only one ever to bring an Oscar to a superhero movie character, and got etched into our mid forever and got him at the top of our list of best movie villains.

Disney obviously loved the work that director Rian Johnson did on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, since the studio announced that Johnson will create a new trilogy of Star Wars movies, serving as a writer and director for the first movie. Johnson will be joined by his longtime collaborator Ram Bergman, who will serve as a producer. According to reports, this trilogy will not focus on Luke Skywalker, and will rather explore the newly introduced characters from the universe.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.” said the president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy.

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.” added Johnson and Bergman.

This doesn’t come as a surprise since Kathleen Kennedy previously stated that the goal for the studio is to plan stories for Star Wars movies for the next 10 years. She also revealed that we can expect the movies that will follow characters Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8 as they explore previously unseen parts of the galaxy.

Rian Johnson’s rise in Hollywood started with a 2008 movie The Brothers Bloom that received positive reviews but failed to make a splash at the box office. He then directed three episodes of AMC’s Breaking Bad before taking on the 2012’s sci-fi movie Looper that starred Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release on December 9, 2017.
