Disney obviously loved the work that director Rian Johnson did on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, since the studio announced that Johnson will create a new trilogy of Star Wars movies, serving as a writer and director for the first movie. Johnson will be joined by his longtime collaborator Ram Bergman, who will serve as a producer. According to reports, this trilogy will not focus on Luke Skywalker, and will rather explore the newly introduced characters from the universe.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.” said the president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy.

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.” added Johnson and Bergman.

This doesn’t come as a surprise since Kathleen Kennedy previously stated that the goal for the studio is to plan stories for Star Wars movies for the next 10 years. She also revealed that we can expect the movies that will follow characters Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8 as they explore previously unseen parts of the galaxy.

Rian Johnson’s rise in Hollywood started with a 2008 movie The Brothers Bloom that received positive reviews but failed to make a splash at the box office. He then directed three episodes of AMC’s Breaking Bad before taking on the 2012’s sci-fi movie Looper that starred Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for release on December 9, 2017.
