Bob Dylan is the latest legendary singer getting his own biopic, with Timothée Chalamet in the lead role. The first trailer for A Complete Unknown sees the young actor transforming into a folk legend during one of the most turbulent times of his creative life.
A Complete Unknown will be set in the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s and chronicle Bob Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer. After becoming a worldwide sensation, Dylan took the world by storm again with his controversial decision to embrace electric instruments during his groundbreaking performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
The controversy surrounding Dylan’s creative shift was chronicled in Elijah Wald’s book Dylan Goes Electric!, which served as inspiration for this film. Jay Cocks adapted it for the big screen alongside co-writer and director James Mangold (Walk the Line, Ford v Ferrari).
Chalamet leads the cast as Bob Dylan, and he’ll be joined by Edward Norton as the folk singer Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Dylan’s girlfriend Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as his collaborator Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as the legendary singer Johnny Cash, Dan Fogler as Dylan’s manager Albert Grossman, and Scoot McNairy as the folk composer Woody Guthrie.
A Complete Unknown will be released in the theatres by Searchlight Pictures at an unspecified date this December.
