Robert Downey Jr. is no stranger to playing an iconic Marvel character, and he’ll soon get to do it again. All hell broke loose when the Oscar winner hit the stage at the San Diego Comic-Con to announce he’ll play Doctor Doom in two new Avengers movies.

Downey experienced somewhat of a career revival after being cast as Tony Stark/Iron Man and helped build the MCU from the ground up. This franchise hasn’t been the same since his departure, but he’s ready to enter the multiverse again.

The Russo brothers hit the stage at this year’s Comic-Con to announce they’re returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, before revealing the Doctor Doom casting.

“If we’re going to bring Victor Von Doom to the screen — he is one of the more complex characters in all of comics… If we’re going to do this … then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world,” said Joe Russo before a masked man in a green suit stepped on stage and took off his mask to reveal he was none other than Robert Downey Jr.

Victor Von Doom will now serve as the main villain in the upcoming Avengers movies after Marvel announced the exit of Jonathan Majors as Kang. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will hit the theatres in 2026 and 2027, as the final films of the MCU’s Phase Six.
