Francesca Gardiner, who serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer of the new series, confirmed the casting news alongside Mark Mylod, who’ll direct multiple episodes of the show. The duo said they’re “delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard” and added they “can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”
HBO is yet to cast the three main characters—Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger—but their casting will be announced before the series starts filming later this summer. Back in December, it was reported that over 30,000 kids auditioned for the lead roles, and that the casting team was planning to “workshop with some of our shortlisted candidates” in January.

]]>After finding acclaim as a theatre actress, Smith established herself as a rising film star during the 1960s. She played Desdemona opposite Laurence Olivier in the adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello, landing her first Oscar nomination, only to win the Academy Award just four years later for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
She was on top of her game during the 1970s, as well, winning her second Oscar for the ensemble anthology comedy California Suite. We’ve seen her receive Oscar nods for her supporting turns in several period dramas from that point on, including A Room with a View and Gosford Park.
The 90s marked a shift to more commercial projects for Smith, who starred in Hook opposite Robin Williams and Sister Act alongside Whoopi Goldberg. This was just one of many franchises she appeared in over the years that allowed her to show off her dry humor, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel followed a similar formula.
Smith found renewed success during the 21st century thanks to two roles that introduced her to a younger audience. She spent a decade playing Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise and later won three Emmys for her portrayal of Dowager Countess in the hit period drama Downton Abbey.

]]>Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone may have been published two decades ago, but the series remains one of the most popular franchises of all time. As it stands, the magical world of Harry Potter is worth more than $25 billion. The book itself has been published in over 75 languages and there have now been ten films in the franchise, which includes Magical Beasts and Where To Find Them.
J.K. Rowling has also written a play on Broadway and there are multiple theme parks around the world which have implemented a Harry Potter theme, including Universal Studios in Japan. But why are we all so obsessed?
There are multiple elements of Harry Potter which make it irresistible. It’s a story of friendship and childhood, and when you take out the potions and spells, Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s experiences are surprisingly relatable. Harry Potter also tells the triumph of good over evil. It’s a structure we know and love, a formula that has been popular since the early myths. When you take all these elements and mix in magic, flying, and mythical creatures, you have a recipe for global success.
There are other external elements that ensured the brand’s global success too. The Internet was just starting up, which gave fan fiction a chance to really take off. There were also few rivals when it came to fantasy fiction. In fact, it had traditionally not been a genre that had performed well. Harry Potter filled a gap in the market and ended up dominating the children’s fiction market entirely.
And yet this doesn’t quite seem to cover it. The impact that Harry Potter has had on the world is immeasurable and perhaps there really is no singular reason why. It’s got to be magic.

“With Stuart Craig, who’s the production designer, and his team, we discussed what the wand would be,” Fiennes told GQ.
“It has a hook on it, so I can hold my hand, and then the end can hook around this finger. Like I almost have the hand open… you’d think it would fall off the hand. But I just enjoyed that it could be light in the hand.”
He also revealed his favorite scene in the series and said: “I loved shooting the death duel, that was cool, with Daniel [Radcliffe] in the courtyard – that was epic.”
It has been 18 years since the first Harry Potter film came out but little by little, we are unraveling the mysteries of the franchise.

]]>During his appearance on WIRED’s ‘Autocomplete Interview’, Radcliffe was asked to answer some of the most-Googled questions people have asked about him. One frequently Googled question is: “What is Daniel Radcliffe’s favourite Harry Potter?”
The Harry Potter star’s answer was The Order Of The Phoenix.
“I love the last one, but I also really love the fifth, which is not a lot of people’s favourite, I kind of realise,” Radcliffe answered. “I love it because of the relationship between Harry and Sirius [Black], and you get a lot of Gary Oldman in that movie.
“That was my favorite one. Probably to film as well. We had a really, really good time making that one. Five or seven, part two.”
Last year, Radcliffe’s co-star Rupert Grint (aka Ron Weasley) admitted that he can’t watch the Harry Potter films after The Prisoner of Askaban. He struggles particular with film number six and admitted: “It’s hard to watch a film like Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince because I’m just not very good in it. I hate it. My acting is very one-note, and I can see I got complacent, and what I was trying to do just didn’t come across.”
Whatever Grint thinks, Ron Weasley is still one of out favorite characters of all time.

]]>When she doesn’t snitch on Harry and Ron
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Hermione is introduced as a know-it-all with no friends. When Ron and Harry save her from the troll in the toilets and Professor McGonagall asks why they are there, she lies to get Harry and Ron out of trouble. That scene was essentially the start of their friendship.
When she disguises herself as Bellatrix
In the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Hermione disguises herself as Bellatrix so that she can retrieve the Horcrux from the witch’s vault. Watching Helena Bonham Carter play Hermione pretending to be a Death Eater is fantastic to watch.
When she goes to the dance with Krum
When Hermione shows up to the dance with heart throb Viktor Krum in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, everyone’s jaw drops with jealousy. It’s a classic rom-com ‘geek gets the guy’ cliché but she nails it.
Hermione kisses Ron
In the final film, Hermione and Ron finally kiss after years of the ‘will they/won’t they?’ dynamic. It’s a heroic, passionate kiss and it only took them one shot to get right!
When she punches Malfoy in the face
Quite possibly the best Hermione moment is when after three years of being tormented by Malfoy, she has had enough and threatens him with her wand. When Harry and Ron remind her he’s not worth getting expelled for, she punches him square in the face and he runs off crying like a little girl.

Sirius Black’s death was tragic not just because he was a great character, but because he was Harry’s godfather. He was also Harry’s only hope of living a normal life in the wizarding world and leaving the Dursleys.
