Two time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender could be lacing up his cleats very soon.

Fassbender is in the final stages of negotiations to star in the sports underdog drama, which re-teams Taika Waititi with Fox Searchlight.

Next Goal Wins is based on a 2014 British documentary of the same name, about the national soccer team of American Samoa. According to Variety, Waititi’s film will follow the true story of Dutch coach Thomas Rongen (Fassbender) who attempts to turn the underdog team’s fortunes around in time to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, after years of losses.

Fassbender’s casting is the only one to be confirmed. It is, however, known that casting calls have gone out for actors to play the team members.

The Kiwi filmmaker will helm Next Goal Wins before taking on Marvel’s 4th Thor film, Love & Thunder. His latest feature Jojo Rabbit recently had its world premiered at Toronto.
