HBO Max Is Brining “Practical Magic” Back

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in "Practical Magic"

The upcoming new streaming service has greenlit a prequel series to Practical Magic.

HBO Max is bringing some magic with a new series based on Alice Hoffman’s novels Rules of Magic and Practical Magic.

The 1998 film, based on the latter and starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, became an instant cult classic.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Rules of Magic, follows two sisters “who feel the isolation of being witches cursed with the inability to find love.”

Set in the 1960s, the eccentric aunts Franny and Jet (played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest in the film) become “feared and revered, [while] their brother Vincent leaves an unexpected legacy.”

The Rules of Magic pilot order joins two more original series ordered by the new streaming service — Generation and Red Bird Lane. Also coming to HBO Max are binge worthy titles such as Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Pretty Little Liars.

HBO Max is set to launch in spring 2020.
