This year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards shifted to the virtual ceremony in the face of the WGA strike, but that didn’t this ceremony from honoring the best movies and shows of the year. The Last of Us was the biggest winner of the night, and it collected a total of three trophies.

The Last of Us faced tough competition in Stranger Things, The White Lotus, Wednesday, Wolf Pack, Yellowjackets, and Yellowstone, but it managed to beat them all to win the trophy for the best TV show. It was also a big night for Pedro Pascal who collected two awards: best hero and best duo, alongside his The Last of Us co-star Bella Ramsey.

There were no clear front-runners in the movie field, and Scream VI pulled quite an upset to win the award for the best movie, defeating the likes of Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Elvis, Nope, Smile, and Top Gun: Maverick. Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick), Adam Sandler (Murder Mystery 2), and Elizabeth Olsen (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) won acting awards for their performances.

The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards took place virtually on May 7, after the in-person ceremony was canceled in the face of the ongoing writers’ strike.
