Due to the delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we spent more time than ever waiting for the Oscar nominations—but the wait is finally over. The list of contenders for the upcoming Academy Awards has been unveiled, and Mank topped it with a total of ten nods.

David Fincher’s black and white film about the making of Citizen Kane is one of the movies nominated for the best picture award. The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are also in the running.

All of these films, with the exception of Promising Young Woman, scored a total of six nominations. Emerald Fennell’s black comedy is in the running for five awards, and so is Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which missed out on the best picture nomination.

Fennell also made history alongside Chloé Zhao by receiving a nomination for the best director. This is the first time that two women are in the running in this category at the same time, and Zhao is the first woman of color to ever be nominated for this award.

After the delay caused by the ongoing global pandemic, the 93rd Academy Awards will take place on April 25th. The Academy representatives previously told Variety that an in-person telecast will happen, but we’re yet to learn the details about its format.
