“West Side Story”: See Anita’s First Look From the Reboot

Ariana DeBose’s Anita is revealed!

The actress’s character from the West Side Story remake was unveiled by 20th Century Fox Saturday via social media. Anita is the leader of the Sharks Bernardo’s girlfriend in the story, which explores love and rivalry in 1957 New York.

Rita Moreno played the original Anita in the 1961 classic. Moreno scored a best-supporting actress Oscar win for her portrayal. Moreno is also part of the remake and is set to star as Valentina as well as serving as one of the film’s executive producer.

The highly anticipated remake from Steven Spielberg also stars Ansel Elgort (Tony), Rachel Zegler (Maria), Ana Isabelle (Rosalia), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank), Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke), and Curtiss Cook (Abe). 

Penning the script is award-winning playwright Tony Kushner. Tony Award-winner Justin Peck is the remake’s choreographer. Gustavo Dudamel will helm the recording of Leonard Bernstein’s iconic score from a score by composer and conductor David Newman.
