After a tough year for the box office, Wonder Woman 1984 swooped in to save the day just in time for Christmas. Its box office numbers are so impressive that Warner Bros. green-lit its sequel with Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot only a few days after its release.

Toby Emmerich, the chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said he’s excited to be able to continue Diana Prince’s story with the “real-life Wonder Women” Gadot and Jenkins after the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984.

This film opened in theaters on December 25th and grossed $85 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This is a pretty impressive number for 2020, especially considering you don’t even have to go to theaters to watch this superhero flick.

Wonder Woman 1984 also simultaneously premiered on HBO Max, where it found enormous success. WarnerMedia reported that “nearly half of the platform’s retail subscribers viewing the film on the day of its arrival, along with millions of wholesale subscribers who have access to HBO Max via a cable, wireless, or other partner services.”
