We shouldn’t give up on the third installment in the Tron franchise just yet. In March 2017, it was revealed that Disney is looking to reboot the franchise with Jared Leto attached to play the main character. There were no details about the project since then, so many thought that the studio has given up on the franchise. According to Jared Leto, that isn’t the case.
“It was a huge movie for me as well and I do think there’s so much potential in that world, there’s so much left to be said,” said Leto recently. “I’m absolutely game to try to help in any way that I can bring that to life. It’s something that we’re in discussions about and very much looking forward to bringing to reality. It’s very early days though.”
Although this statement from Leto makes us think that Disney will eventually bring back the franchise to the big screens, we shouldn’t expect it anytime soon due to studio’s preoccupation with Marvel and Star Wars movies.
The original Tron movie was released in 1982 and starred Jeff Bridges as a computer programmer who gets sucked into the software world and tries to find a way to get back to his normal life. The movie gained a cult following through years and finally in 2010 a sequel titled Tron: Legacy was released. The movie went on to be a box office success despite receiving mixed reviews from the critics.
Although the sequel was supposed to start filming in 2015, with Tron: Legacy, the movie was abruptly canceled, without any explanation.
“Tron 3 is in cryogenic freeze. So, it’s there. It’s not dead. It’s alive, but it’s sitting there, waiting for the right time to move forward,” Kosinski described the situation in February.
