“The Hunger Games” Prequel Movie Has Found Its Director

A familiar face will be returning to direct The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Francis Lawrence, the director of the last three Hunger Games films will helm the prequel.

The Hunger Games‘ franchise is based on the bestselling novels by Suzanne Collins and the prequel novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be available on May 19.

The series, produced by Lionsgate, has grossed over $2.97 billion worldwide.

“‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ is creatively thrilling and takes this world to complex new dimensions that open up amazing cinematic possibilities,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake said.

The prequel takes place 64 years prior to The Hunger Games and follows 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, the future authoritarian ruler of Panem and the villain in the series. Snow will mentor a girl from District 12, Katniss Everdeen’s future home, for the 10th annual Hunger Games.

Lionsgate has yet to cast or announce a release date.
