After firing James Gun as a director and writer of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Disney is having some issues filling the vacancy. There were numerous high-profile names linked to the project in the recent, but studio’s talks with potential candidates are still to get traction. Some of them, like Taika Waititi, aren’t even interested in taking the gig.

Waititi emerged as one of the favorites for directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after Gun’s dismissal after doing a great job as director of Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. The 43-year-old, however, said that he wouldn’t be taking this job during a recent appearance at Television Critics Association press tour.

“Nope. Not doing that movie,” said Waititi when asked about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. “I’m hanging out with [Marvel] still. Talking about new stuff, but I don’t know what that might be yet. I want to do another movie.”

Speaking about reasons for this decision, Waititi said that he feels like that’s still James Gunn’s movie.

“I didn’t really. For me, that’s James’ film,” he added. “Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, it would feel like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad.”

After James Gun was fired, Disney still hoped to have Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 on the track with the beginning of production date set for early 2019 and release being targeted for 2020. When it turned out that it wasn’t so easy to replace Gun, the studio decided to stop production and delay its start for February 2021.
