Season 4 of Stranger Things ended with a bang last week, and it got us even more hyped up for the next chapter. The series creators the Duffer Brothers recently dropped hints about Season 5, revealing that the episodes will be much shorter and compared the ending to the final Lord of the Rings movie.

Stranger Things fans were polarized over the length of episodes in Season 4, but the Duffers intend to keep things short and sweet the next time around. Despite shortening the episode length, they want to keep the series finale as long as in Season 4 and to wrap up the series with one spectacular 2.5-hour episode.

While discussing the show’s final season on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Ross and Matt Duffer also compared its ending with Return of the King, saying it will have several different endings, focusing on different characters.

“Characters are already going to be in action, they’re already going to have a goal and a drive, and I think that’s going to carve out at least a couple hours and make this season feel really different. I’m sure the wrap-up will be a lot longer, it’s going to be Return of the King-ish with, like, eight endings,” the duo explained.

Stranger Things 4: Volume 2 premiered on Netflix on July 1, and broke the record to become the most-viewed streaming series ever over a single week in the US, according to Nielsen.
