“Sherlock Holmes 3” Moved Back by a Year

Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. in "Sherlock Holmes"

Warner Bros. has pushed Sherlock Holmes 3 back a year.

After confirming back in May that the third installment of the hugely popular franchise will open Christmas 2020, the studio now confirms that fans will have to wait another year. The threequel now has a December 21, 2021 release date and according to the studio, the now vacant slot is going to an untitled WB event film.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are set to reprise their roles as the titular detective and his sidekick, Dr. Watson, respectively in the film penned by Chris Brancato. Susan Downey, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram are producing. The project is still searching for a director.

The franchise debuted in 2009 with Sherlock Holmes. The original was then followed with the 2011 Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The two films hauled a combined whopping $1 billion at the global box office.
