“Lord Of The Rings” TV Show: What We Know So Far

Ian McKellen in "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"

A brand new Lord of the Rings TV series is on its way, and here is everything we know so far.

It will be an Amazon production

The Tolkien recreation will be produced by Amazon Studios. They have signed a reported $250 million rights contract back in November last year.

It will be on its way by next year

We don’t know the official release date, but we know that the contract requires them to begin production within at least two years. This means they have until November next year at the absolute latest to start filming.

There will be 5 seasons

As part of the $250 million rights deal, Amazon has committed to producing 5 seasons of the show.

The show will be a prequel to Lord of the Rings

We know nothing about the script or plot, but we do know that the show will be a prequel to LOTR. A rumor suggests that it could focus on the life of a young Aragorn, but we will have to wait for more announcements to confirm.

Ian McKellen is interested in playing Gandolf (again)

While there have been no official cast announcements, Ian McKellan has expressed an interest in reprising the role. He said:

“I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.”
