Jared Leto’s portrayal of DC’s iconic villain Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad divided fans and critics, but it seemed like Leto was destined to play the role for years to come. Still, due to shuffling in DC Extended Universe, none of the projects that involved his version of Joker panned out so we rightfully assumed that Leto won’t return to Clown Prince of Crime. If things turn out this way, however, that won’t be because the Dallas Buyers Club star wasn’t up for it.

In a recent interview, Jared Leto was asked would he be willing to reprise his role as Joker and the actor ended up giving an optimistic response.

“I would definitely play the Joker again. It all depends on the script and the circumstances as it always does,” Leto said.

There were lots of rumors that Leto might appear as Joker in upcoming Harley Quinn spin-off Birds of Prey which is set for release in February 2020, but even if they are true, the actor himself isn’t about to confirm it.

“I don’t think so. You’d have to ask them. Well, we’ll see,” he said when asked about Birds of Prey.

While Jared Leto might not return as Joker anytime soon, we will still get a film based on this character in the near future. Todd Phillips-directed Joker standalone movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, is set for release on October 4th, 2019. The movie will be focused on Joker’s origins and how he became the feared criminal and Batman’s arch nemesis.
