Brian May donated his own clothes to the set of Bohemian Rhapsody.

If you were impressed with how well the costume designers on the Bohemian Rhapsody team managed to replicate Queen’s iconic look, you can thank Brian May in addition to costume designer Julian Day.

During a film panel at the BAFTAs, Julian Day revealed that the iconic Queen guitarist had invited him to his house and pick out some of the original clothes he wore back in the ’70s and ’80s.

“Brian came on set – I hadn’t met him – but I had all the fittings done for him. I was thinking, should I show him them or not?,” he said. “So I spoke to my assistant and she encouraged me to do it.”

May was pretty unimpressed with the costumes and claimed that he “never tucked [his] shirt in”. The meeting took place during the first day of filming when the production team was attempting to recreate Queen’s legendary Live Aid performance.

In order to ensure the film was more authentic, May invited Julian to his house to go through his wardrobe. He gave the costume designer permission to browse through his clothes and “borrow some of his outfits from the 70s and the 80s”

So far, Rami Malek has won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his stellar performance as Freddie Mercury.
