It’s been almost three decades since a song from a Disney animated movie topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” managed to get across the finish line. It hit no. 1 this week, becoming only the second song from a Disney animated movie to do so.

“Bruno” follows in the footsteps of “A Whole New World”, the theme song from Aladdin, as the second song from a Disney animated movie to top the Hot 100. “Breaking Free” from High School Musical and “Let It Go” from Frozen previously entered the top five, but never soared to no. 1.

Other songs from the Encanto soundtrack also found significant success on the charts, while the album itself topped the Billboard 200 for its third week. “Surface Pressure” is the highest-ranking song behind “Bruno” and it peaked at no. 9 this week.

The viral success of this song took everyone by surprise, from Disney executives to its sole writer Lin-Manuel Miranda, who scored his first no. 1 with this tune. Disney didn’t even submit it for award contention, opting for “Dos Oruguitas” instead because they couldn’t have predicted its crossover success. “Bruno” also topped the charts in the UK and entered the top ten in several countries, including Australia, Canada, and Ireland.
