Two decades after breaking into Hollywood with the role of Mia Thermopolis, Anne Hathaway is getting ready to head back to Genovia again. The third film in The Princess Diaries franchise is officially happening with Adele Lim directing, and Hathaway is getting ready to lead its cast.
The Princess Diaries premiered in 2001, and it centered on the awkward teen Mia Thermopolis, whose life turns upside down when she learns her father was the king of the fictional kingdom of Genovia. Its sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement came out in 2004, but this franchise has been dormant for the next two decades.
That will change pretty soon after Hathaway took to social media to confirm she’s officially coming back for The Princess Diaries 3. It remains unclear if any of her co-stars, including Julie Andrews, Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, Robert Schwartzman, and Chris Pine, will make a comeback, as well.
In addition to playing the lead role, Hathaway will also produce the film under her Somewhere Pictures banner. Flora Greeson was in charge of writing the script, while Adele Lim is on board as a director, after finding success as a co-writer of Crazy Rich Asians and making her directorial debut with Joy Ride.
