Generally, the response to Brie Larson’s cinematic debut as Captain Marvel has been pretty positive. The film was excellent and Larson’s performance was spectacular.

One question on fans minds, however, is why in Captain Marvel Larson wore practically no makeup while in the Avengers: Endgame trailer, she is wearing significantly more. In fact, some people found her almost unrecognizable in the trailer compared to her image in her debut standalone feature.

Now, co-director Joe Russo has revealed in a talk with io9, the reason behind this decision. As it turns out, it wasn’t the Russo Brothers’ decision at all.

“We empower them to have control over their characters because they need to be comfortable playing those characters,” Joe Russo explained. “This was Brie’s first time playing the character ever. First day on set as the character ever. And those are the choices that she and her make-up team made.”

“I think as it approached the [solo Captain Marvel film, when] she started to think more about the character, she made other creative choices. But everyone should be given the right to have the freedom to make whatever creative choices they want to make. And those are the ones that she made that day with us.”

Avengers: Endgame will be released in cinemas April 24.
