AMC renews its post-apocalyptic drama for an 11th season.

The news was announced by the network on Saturday.

In more The Walking Dead news, AMC also confirmed that Lauren Cohan will return as a series regular in the new season.

The Walking Dead burst out of the gate 10 years ago as a genre show that had all the character depth of a top-tier prestige drama,” AMC Studios president Sarah Barnett in a statement said. “And now 10 years later — led by the brilliant Angela Kang and fueled by one of the most consistently talented casts in television — this phenomenon is flourishing creatively, with critics and audiences embracing its reset. We’re delighted to welcome back Lauren Cohan, she has meant so much to this show and its passionate, global fanbase, who are in for a fantastic ride over the coming months.”

Showrunner Angela Kang added of Cohan’s Maggie Greene return in season 11: “It’s worked out and we couldn’t be more thrilled. I think [Maggie] is a really compelling character. And Lauren is such a compelling actress.”

The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Danai Gurira, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, Seth Gilliam, Avi Nash, Callan McAuliffe, Cooper Andrews, Eleanor Matsuura, Nadia Hilker, Cailey Fleming, Samantha Morton, Ryan Hurst, Cassady McClincy, and Lauren Ridloff.

The popular AMC show has been going strong for ten whole seasons. In addition to the main show, there have been five seasons of the spin-off show Fear the Walking Dead. This had lead Marquand to assume that the show will be sticking around for a while.

“We already have Fear the Walking Dead, but there’s already talk of a second spin-off which would be amazing,” Marquand told Heart FM. “I don’t know how it’s going to look. There’s rumors right now, so I don’t know if it’s actually going to happen. But I would love that.

“It’s like Star Trek. It will go on for like 30 years, hopefully. That would be great. The fans like it. It’s a universally loved show because it deals with themes that everyone can relate to.”

AMC is tripling down on the zombie post-apocalypse. Despite the fact that their popular series The Walking Dead struggled to keep its audience in season nine, the network announced third show set in the Walking Dead universe.

Although there aren’t many details about the project so far, AMC did reveal that the spinoff will premiere in 2020 with a 10-episode run. Matt Negrete, longtime writer for the original, will serve as a showrunner on the series while Walking Dead boss Scott M. Gimple will co-create and produce.

“I’m beyond excited to be a part of this new show set in The Walking Dead universe,” said Negrete in a statement. “Writing and producing for the original series has been the job of a lifetime and I’m honored to be working with Scott and all the fine Dead folks at AMC in this new capacity. I can’t wait for the fans of the franchise to see what we’ve been cooking up!”

The Walking Dead was once one of the most popular programs on television, averaging 14.38 million viewers in season five. Since then, however, the series saw a big decline in numbers and managed to attract only five million during the last season.

Fear the Walking Dead, the first spinoff that premiered in 2015, is also doing quite poorly with the finale of season four being watched by only two million people. Still, it looks like AMC believes that the zombie-loving audience will appreciate another expansion of the Walking Dead world.

“Showing audiences an unseen pocket of The Walking Dead universe steeped in a new mythology is a very cool way to celebrate a Decade of the Dead on TV and over 15 years of [creator] Robert Kirkman’s brilliant comic.” – added Gimple. “Matt Negrete is one of the best writer-producers in TWD’s long history, I’m thrilled to be working beside him to tell stories unlike we’ve seen before, taking our first step into an even larger world.”

Refreshingly, the episode continues exactly where the last one ended, with our heroes in an epic graveyard battle with walkers and whisperers alike. It brings us straight back to the shock and horror of the sudden and unexpected death of Jesus and the realization that yes, he really is gone, and no, there won’t be any resurrection. Sadly, this scene is over abruptly and we watch the team grab his corpse and exit through a gate with minimum action or effort.

The importance of bringing Jesus’s body back and the closure it allows Hilltop for the handing over of the reins officially to Tara is apparent and obvious.

The one person who is seriously lacking closure, however, is Michone, given that a burial was not something she was able to do with Rick. In spite of this, she thanks Darryl for searching for him in the past and ‘what he did after’ fueling more intrigue about what went on in the missing six years leading to the fallout between the groups and Maggie’s absence.

Further introduction to the Whisperers is drip fed to us by the capture, imprisonment, and interrogation of the mysterious new character Lydia. How much we have learnd is unsure as it is pretty clear that every other word from her lips is a lie.

Meanwhile, Negan has gone walkabout from his unlocked jail cell into the outside world. This is sandwiched in between a couple of well-directed bonding scenes between him and stony-faced young Judith. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is excellent as ever, managing to pull off every scene with his usual charisma, despite having no one to bounce off other than walkers and a pack of savage wild dogs.

The scenes where he revisits The Sanctuary are almost heart-warming to the point where you could easily forget that actually he was a sadistic psychopathic despot there only half a series ago. This is deliberate though as both he and the viewer do find closure of that storyline and accept that Judith was right and there is ‘nothing out there for him’ allowing us both to move on and look forward.

All this paves the way for further introduction to the new storyline with the Whisperers, this time as they catch the hapless search party for Alden and Luke. We will have to wait and see what happens to them but judging by the tone of new character Alpha’s voice, they won’t be going back for tea and crumpets.

Overall, the episode didn’t have the same explosive excitement as some previous midseason premiers. It still had its moments though and flowed well considering how much went on to set the scene for the rest of the series. It certainly leaves the viewer wanting to see more.

Looking for a scary series to sink your teeth into? Here are 10 of the scariest and most binge-worthy horror series from the 21st century.

Santa Clarita Diet

Starring Drew Barrymore, Santa Clarita Diet revives the zombie concept and transforms it into something hilariously modern and original.

Penny Dreadful

The drama series plucks its sinister characters from literary works from the 1800s. It’s captivating and very stylish.

True Blood

True Blood is a raunchy and daring dark fantasy horror show about some very sexy vampires.

Supernatural

Supernatural follows two brothers as they hunt sinister and frightening monsters. It’s in its 14th season right now, so if you want a horror show that will keep you occupied for months, Supernatural might be a good choice.

Hannibal

Hannibal contains some incredibly gruesome murders, which are presented to us so artistically that we forget how horrible what we are looking at really is.

Stranger Things

Stranger Things was the show everyone was raving about when it first came to Netflix in 2016. It’s incredibly well written and has some very creepy moments.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

OK, it technically started in the 90’s, but Buffy ran into the 2000’s and was so forward thinking and relevant that it deserves to be on the list. Plus, it’s got everything from demons to vampires, ghosts and werewolves. Oh, and Buffy’s best friend is a witch.

American Horror Story

American Horror Story is the pinnacle of TV horror. It spans over eight seasons, each telling a different story, and it contains monsters and murders more frightening then most of the movies we’ve seen.

The Walking Dead

The horror drama follows survivors of the zombie apocalypse and is one of the most popular shows on television right now.

The Haunting of Hill House

Netflix’s latest horror series is so frightening that many didn’t make it past the first few episodes. If you’re feeling brave, it’s absolutely worth the watch.

The Comic Con celebration continues in San Diego, with new trailers and lots of new info on all of our favorite shows.

One of the big ones is AMC’s The Walking Dead, which will return for its 9th season in October.

Check out the five and a half minutes trailer below, as well as the scoop from the show’s creators and cast!

Let’s start with the bad news. Everyone’s favorite sheriff, Rick Grimes, will bow out during season 9, actor Andrew Lincoln has confirmed.

“This will be my last season,” Lincoln said, bidding an emotional farewell at Comic Con.

“I love this show, it means everything to me. I love the people who make this show–I promise not to cry, I’ve done enough crying on screen–I am also deeply fond of the people who watch this show, you people. This has been the most extraordinary, amazing, and beautiful experience of my career made largely because of you guys.”

But he promised to go out with a bang! “My relationship with Mr. Grimes is far from over … There are two episodes [this season] that are my favorite episodes since the pilot,” Lincoln told fans.

Much like the comics, season 9 will begin with a time jump, though unlike the comics it won’t be as considerable (a few months to the comic’s assumed 2 years jump). The world is falling into decay as we draw further and further away from the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse, and Rick and the gang have to deal with this changing reality.

There’ll also be some new characters, including a new big bad: Alpha, played by Samantha Morton, who leads a new intriguing group called The Whisperers. What kind of threat they pose to our intrepid group of survivors remains to be seen (unless you read the comics, and then you already know).

The recent The Walking Dead mid-season premiere is the lowest rated to date. This is perhaps less surprising when you consider that the the mid-season finale was the lowest rated since Season 2. The season ratings have been decreasing steadily since 2016 with Season 8 reaching an all time low for the show.

Season 8 ratings have not only reached an all time low, but the amount of viewers watching has decreased by over 7 million since Season 4. Perhaps this is to be expected considering that with the rise of Netflix, most people’s TV viewing time has dropped significantly. It is a matter of opinion whether the show’s quality has decreased and whether this is the real reason for the drop in ratings and views.

That being said, the show remains incredibly popular with over 8 million viewers and the new season is still rated higher than the Winter Olympics in the 18-49 demographic. It’s ratings might have dropped, but it’s still one of the top watched shows on TV after Game of Thrones. Even if ratings continue to decline, The Walking Dead has a loyal fan base who continue to watch. This does depend of course on who the writers have decided to kill off or bring back this season. Will you be watching to find out?

On March 23rd, Thorpe Park in Staines (UK) will reopen for “The Year of The Walking Dead” in celebration of the brand new “The Walking Dead” ride. Fans of the TV show and thrill seekers alike are buzzing with excitement to get their tickets.

On weekends, the theme park will be swarming with “Walkers” inspired by the TV show, who will chase park guests in search of the “Safe Zone”. Even the queue for the ride will feature live actors. Thrill seekers will be told they must complete the coaster to survive.

The roller coaster will shoot riders through dark tunnels and will be filled with halts and shudders. It is anticipated to be a 10/10 on the thrill scale.

Throughout the year, the park will be hosting a range of apocalyptic events related to the show. Some of the highlights will include:

  • The Walking Dead Live Action Maze: Living Nightmare Extreme (May 25 – June 3)
  • Zombie Hunt – battle for survival in woodland on the outskirts of Thorpe Park resort during summer (July 21 – Sept 3)
  • Fright Nights – the hugely popular season returns with a Walking Dead theme (October 5 – October 31)

We can’t wait to hear what fans of The Walking Dead make of the ride and whether it is as scary as people are saying.
