Yes, 2018 is over but that makes now the perfect time to look back at some of the best movies the year brought. Here are the top 10 horror films ranked from best to worst.

A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place is a horrifying, anxious horror flick which at its heart is a gripping monster movie. It’s unique, thrilling and unnervingly suspenseful.

Hereditary

What if evil could be inherited? The tale of the haunted house got terrifying again with 2018’s terrifying and unique horror Hereditary.

Bird Box

In this post-apocalyptic nightmare, nowhere is safe. Like The Quiet Place, Bird Box depicts what it is like to live in constant anxiety and fear.

Apostle

A brutal and bloodthirsty cult tale from Netflix, which didn’t disappoint.

Suspiria

Critics may be divided on this uncompromising remake, but whatever your thoughts might be, this radical re-imagining of Suspiria is bursting with insanity and horror.

Annihilation

Netflix’s surreal and unnerving sci-fi thriller pulls you into an uncomfortable world and gets under your skin.

Mandy

Nicholas Cage’s most recent movie appearance was surprisingly gripping with a healthy dose of violence and bloodshed.

Halloween

Michael Myers was gloriously terrifying in his return to the overdue Halloween sequel. Although it wasn’t quite as compelling as the original, it did bring closure to the franchise.

Insidious: The Last Key

The final installment of the Insidious franchise seemed to end the era of cheesy jump scares before we received a chilling run of terrifying post-apocalyptic terrors. Still, it was good fun and wrapped up the franchise nicely. Read our review here.

The Nun

The Nun hardly lives up to some of the other titles on this list but it was still entertaining and some people liked it. Read our harsh review here.

The Conjuring universe is a cinematic world where some of the nastiest demonic forces jump out on your screens and keep you up at night. Here is a list of every movie in The Conjuring universe ranked from worst to best.

Annabelle

A couple’s life is turned upside down when their doll is possessed by an evil demon after a couple of satanic cultists invade their home. Annabelle is creepy as hell, but the film is the weakest in The Conjuring universe so far.

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation has more jump scares than plot, but it did have us on the edge of our seats. It also tied in nicely with Annabelle at the end, so kudos for that.

The Conjuring

Ed and Lorraine are paranormal investigators helping a family who are being terrorized by demonic forces. The feature is the highest rated of the franchise on IMDB and has some truly horrifying moments.

The Conjuring 2

Although rated lower than its predecessor, The Conjuring 2 has some terrifying moments that had people leaving the cinema. The only criticism is that the ending got a little cheesy and there were some cringey moments throughout.

The Nun

The Nun, the newest movie, is terrifying. The nun was also the most frightening demon in The Conjuring 2.

Another cliche, disappointing horror movie that trades genuine terror for cheap jump scares.

Despite having the highest grossing opening weekend of the franchise, pulling in an impressive $53.5 million, the movie has received the lowest rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a dismal 27%. Is this another case of elite criticism distancing itself from the public opinion? Perhaps. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to side with the critics on this one as we found The Nun extremely disappointing.

It’s not that we had hopes for the fifth installment of the franchise, it’s just that the nun was probably the scariest element of The Conjuring 2 and the news of her landing her own standalone movie was news that we could get behind. Creating a prequel was not a horrible idea but the execution, on the other hand, was disastrous.

The first mistake was being overambitious with the film’s overlap with the rest of the franchise. Including a short clip of Annabelle at the end of The Conjuring was palatable but the frequent overlap with the Annabelle movies in this instance was poorly done. The meta-flashbacks were jarring and unnecessary and added little to the reception of the feature.

The plot itself was also cliche and uncreative. The movie repeats the franchise’s insistence that the films are based on true stories, which is still dull and unbelievable. Having a trainee nun as the heroine was an interesting move, considering that the nuns are usually the first to get killed or possessed in most Catholic horror movies. On the other hand, the nun in the title is, in fact, a villain dressed up as a scary nun in an attempt to mock the church.

Yes, there were some good jumps scares but like many blockbuster horror movies, one of The Nun’s fundamental downfalls is the way it relies too heavily on jump scares rather than focusing on skilfully building up suspense.

In terms of the movie’s positives, the setting was well crafted. The Romanian countryside and the antiquated architecture is creepy and effective. If you take out the acting, the cliche writing and the predictably of the prequel, it might have been just above mediocre. Even better, cut out 1 hour and 30 minutes of running time and they might really have something.

YouTube have officially removed the new teaser for The Conjuring spin-off The Nun after users complained that it was “too scary.”

The teaser shows a six second clip of a volume sign being decreased until it hits mute. A screamer of the nun’s face then jumps out and makes you jump out of your skin.

YouTube users complained that the ad was “too scary” and that the screamer tactic violated YouTube’s shocking content policy.

One users complained: “Stupid jump scare ads like The Nun ones on YouTube are a sure-fire way to make sure I will never, ever watch a movie.”

Others commented that the ad was potentially dangerous to those who were not expecting the screamer and had anxiety or health problems.

Following the campaign for the ad to be removed, YouTube have taken down the advert. They confirmed in a statement: “We value diversity and respect for others, and we strive to avoid offending or shocking users with ads, websites, or apps that are inappropriate for our ad network.”

Since it has been taken down, however, another user has re-uploaded the ad to YouTube. If you’re feeling brave, you can watch it below.

The Nun will be released in cinemas September 7.
