Season four of Rick and Morty only recently landed on our screens after a really long gap. Fortunately, it looks like we won’t have to wait so long for season five.

Creators and show bosses Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have confirmed that they are already at work on the new season. They revealed that although the pandemic has prevented the writers from meeting in a physical room, they have been working on the new season via Zoom.

Harmon also shared the key difference between writers meeting on Zoom and in person. One of the key differences he noticed is that Zoom meetings may allow for more equality in the workplace.

“There are a lot of things that are better about a Zoom writers’ room, and they are balanced out by things that are worse,” Harmon explained.

“The most obvious example is the stuff that people have looked into in recent years about how men are a little more socialised to interrupt and to be interrupted, and women are possibly socialised to consider it rude and therefore get a shorter end of the stick when they are in a mixed writers’ room.

“Everyone is equalised in the interruption sense in a Zoom writers’ room. And I think that’s a good thing, because it really democratises what can be an easily ignored psychological thing that could continue to go on in a physical writers’ room.”

Seasons 1-4 of Rick and Morty are available on Netflix now.

Rick and Morty is often described as the cartoon where a drunk grandpa takes his goofy grandson on a series of insane adventures through time and space. Think Doctor Who for edgy teens. Ultimately though, Rick and Morty is essentially a show about existential nihilism.

For anyone that’s not caught up, nihilism is the complete rejection of any religion or moral principles. It’s the viewpoint that life is meaningless and skepticism ought to be adopted in lieu of dogmatism. Unsurprisingly, the lonely genius Rick Sanchez is the poster boy for nihilistic philosophy.

Think about it. Rick spends the entire series jumping through chaotic worlds and reminding his grandkids of how little they matter. On more than one occasion, Rick has ended planet Earth only to resume his life in another dimension where even his own daughter is technically another variation of the original. While Morty crumbles in horror, Rick nonchalantly digs his own grave. Everything is meaningless. Nothing matters, etc, etc.

What is hopeless about Rick’s nihilism is that even he fails fully to adopt the philosophy. This leaves him as a character that is full of painful paradoxes. On one occasion, Rick tells Morty: “I hate to break it to you but what people call ‘love’ is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed. It hits hard, Morty, then it slowly fades, leaving you stranded in a failing marriage.” This is all very well only in another episode, Rick is left suicidal after his ex-girlfriend Unity breaks up with him again. Even Rick cannot live a life of absolute nihilism and this leaves him in a constant state of loneliness and bitterness. He cannot accept comforting dogmatisms nor can he fully embrace nihilism.

What is great about Rick and Morty, however, is that it often succeeds in transforming nihilism into something that’s not totally depressing. Sure, nothing “matters” in a world of unlimited dimensions, but this doesn’t have to be soul-destroying. Morty’s capacity for optimism is what ultimately prevents the show from being a total depress-fest.

The best example of this is probably when Summer has a breakdown when she discovers her parents would have been better off if she hadn’t been born. In her time of existential hopelessness, Morty tells her the disturbing story of how he now eats breakfast just yards away from his own corpse. Following this, he precedes to give Summer some oddly comforting advice. He says: “Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody’s gonna die. Come watch TV?”

This may sound like a case of accepting the meaningless of life and giving into nihilism, but what Morty is really doing is embracing it. Life may be meaningless, or it may not be meaningless. Either way, it makes no difference. Take joy in the small things life has to offer and spend time with the people you care about. “Everybody’s gonna die. Come watch TV?” is essentially Rick and Morty‘s message to its viewers. And that’s what makes the show so irresistibly ingenious.

At long last the trailer for Season 4 of Rick and Morty is here.

With just a month to go, the first trailer for the forthcoming season has finally been unveiled. But that’s not all! Adult Swim also revealed the new season’s release date — November 10.

But it’s not all good new. Despite the show not airing new episodes since October 2017, the new season will be split, and the November 10 premiere will be of just five episodes.

“Half the season you deserve,” the trailer’s narrator says. “All the season we could handle.”

It’s not new that the show’s co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have struggled to meet their deadlines in the past. They say it’s because of the show’s high animation standards.

“We want every episode to be good,” Roiland explained. “There are times we’re like, ‘Okay, this one will be the worst of the season,’ and we’re still compelled to do everything in our power to fix what we think is wrong with it. It could be considered one of the reasons the show takes so long. When we get the episodes back in color, it’s easy to see if that we cut this and add that, it will elevate this episode significantly. Sometimes we get them back and are like, ‘We need to roll our sleeves up and figure this out.’ This season’s been good. Pretty excited about this season.”

The second half of the season is slated to premiere sometime in 2020.

Since its debut in December 2013, Rick and Morty has reached cult status in both Europe and America. There was a brief period in 2017 when it seemed like the cartoon about a time-traveling alcoholic grandpa and his dim-witted good-intentioned grandson Morty was everybody’s favorite show. But how exactly did the Adult Swim kooky creation become such a big hit with just about everyone who has seen it?

Well, there are a lot of answers to that. First off, it’s a cartoon for adults. Sure, there’s been about a million episodes of Family Guy and South Park prior to the show’s arrival but Rick and Morty deals with adult themes and gets you unwillingly contemplating the meaning of existence. In one of the earliest episodes, we watch a grumpy Rick and a quivering Morty bury their own bodies in the back garden of a parallel universe. They then rejoin Summer, Beth and Jerry for dinner only it’s not their Summer, Beth and Jerry. It’s the family of the dead Rick and Morty they just put six feet in the ground and replaced in an alternate universe. Last time I checked, American Dad didn’t have us questioning the fluidity of identity after they killed off the human race with a horrific disease in episode 6.

When Rick and Morty got popular, other creators were inspired to use cartoon as a medium to explore adult themes. Bojack Horseman dropped in August 2014 to tell the story of a middle-aged suicidal horse and a few years later, we were treated to Big Mouth. Rick and Morty transformed the cartoon into the perfect medium to tell extremely dark stories in a light and comical way. Think about how unpalatable Mr Tommy’s story line in season 4 would be if he was played by an actual human actor instructed to have incestuous relations and then eat the babies for show. It just wouldn’t work. Similarly, watching Bojack commit horrendous crimes would be unforgivable if we weren’t able to distance ourselves from the character by interpreting him as a ridiculous cartoon reverse-centaur.

And so, as much as we have reserved a space in our heart for The Simpsons, churning out episode after episode with no real character development or plot progression just doesn’t cut it anymore. Now we have Rick and Morty, we want grown-up cartoons that make us feel things we never thought we could feel about a human-sized jellybean. What’s more, we want it released on Netflix so we can binge-watch it all in one go.

Rick and Morty has its fair share of wacky characters who live morally questionable lives. This list goes out to the baddest bad guys who are too ridiculous to be classified as actual “villains.”

Supernova

At the end of the infamous “Vindicators” episode, it turns out that the big bad “Worldender” wasn’t that bad at all. Or maybe he was, but Rick was able to defeat him while being so blind-drunk he forgot he was doing it. At the end of the episode, Supernova turns out to be more of a villain and vows revenge against Rick for embarrassing her.

Mr Jellybean

Quite frankly, the less that is said about Mr Jellybean the better.

Evil Morty

Eyepatch Morty is the only Morty to ever outsmart a Rick. His return in season 3 makes the chances of him becoming a recurring character look promising.

The Devil

Summer’s boss at her first summer job turns out to be the actual devil himself. We’ve seen several horrifying depictions of the devil in TV and cinema, but Mr. Lucius Needful hanging out in a pawn shop full of cursed objects has got to be the most ridiculous.

Tammy

Tammy seemed like an innocent high school student who was in love with Rick’s best friend, Bird Person. When it was revealed that she is actually a Federation spy, we felt just as betrayed as Bird Person.

Rick Sanchez

If you’re wondering why this list is short, it’s because the episodes of Rick and Morty do not follow the typical ‘good guy vs bad guy’ format. This is partly because when you think about it, Rick is the biggest villain of them all. He defeated Worldender, “Cronenberg’d” the entire human race and even outsmarted the Devil himself. He does what he wants and rarely considers the repercussions. He possesses the power of a God and although he has saved the world on the odd occasion, he has also ended it too.

Rick and Morty is full of a whole lot of crazy aliens, planets and inventions. Many of these inventions come from Rick Sanchez himself. In fact, there are so many that we had to divide them into each season. Here’s our top choices from season one.

The Space Cruiser

Rick built his very own spaceship out of bits and bobs he could find in his daughter’s garage. Despite being full of empty alcohol bottles, it actually works pretty well.

The Portal Gun

The portal gun gives access to any universe or alternate dimension the user wishes. It’s pretty much the device that enables the show to happen.

Shrink Ray (and Anatomy Park)

In season one, Rick builds an entire theme park inside the body of a homeless man. It is somehow both disgusting and completely awesome at the same time and exists all thanks to Rick’s shrink ray.

Meeseeks Box

The meeseeks are conjured by the box to do a specific task and then disappear when the task has been completed. Use with caution.

Dream Inceptor

The dream inceptor is basically Rick’s version of the device in the confusing Inception movie. The device takes him to a strange world where he meets a Freddy Krueger knock-off.

Rick and Morty season 4 is officially in production!

Earlier this year, the fantastic news broke out that interdimensional hit TV show Rick and Morty has been renewed for not just one more season, but 70 more episodes.

Despite this news, there was no hint about when the new season would be released and fans feared that Mr Poopybutthole’s warning fared true, and it would air in a “really, really long time.”

Co-creator Justin Roiland, however, has announced that season four has officially gone into production. He told Comic Book Resource:

“It’s exciting, it’s a little surreal. Even just being in the writer’s room for half the day every day this week, the ideas are … it’s going to be great.

“We want the episodes to stay good, but we do also want to try to turn them around a little quicker now that we have this big order, I think it gives us the ability to be faster,” he said.

“We’re not going to do these long breaks, these chasms in between seasons anymore. We’re going to schedule vacation time and just keep the machine going. It’s going to be really cool.”

There’s still no news of when the new season will be out, but people are expecting it early 2019. After that, it looks as if we won’t be waiting long for season five and that’s great too.

Rick and Morty is a sci-fi fantasy comedy which somehow manages to make us laugh out loud while also provoking us to ask some pretty profound philosophical questions. Here are five times that the show got us questioning love, the education system, life and the universe before pointing us towards some pretty nihilistic conclusions.

Rick Potion #9

“Listen, Morty, I hate to break it to you, but what people call ‘love’ is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed. It hits hard, Morty, then it slowly fades, leaving you stranded in a failing marriage.”

Ricky Business

Birdperson on Rick’s catchphrase: “It’s not nonsense at all. In my people’s tongue it means, ‘I am in great pain, please help me.'”

Rixty Minutes

“I’m a version of your brother you can trust when he says ‘Don’t run.’ Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody’s gonna die. Come watch TV.”

Pilot

“I’ll tell you how I feel about school, Jerry: it’s a waste of time. Bunch of people runnin’ around bumpin’ into each other, got a guy up front says, ‘2 + 2,’ and the people in the back say, ‘4.’ Then the bell rings and they give you a carton of milk and a piece of paper that says you can go take a dump or somethin’. I mean, it’s not a place for smart people, Jerry.”

It’s official, Rick and Morty has been renewed for not just season 4, but for a whopping 70 more episodes – yes, you read that right.

The show’s co-creator Dan Harmon told GQ that the deal was made after a long negotiation process.

“It was a lot of back and forth, but Justin and I just needed enough episodes and the right kind of deal structure that would give us permission to do what we want to do, which is truly focus on the show,” he said. “We got all that, and we’re both very excited.”

The question that fans are asking is when will the next season be released. There has been no news yet on how the 70 episodes will be divided up into seasons and when the seasons will be coming out. All fans have to go by is a jesting comment made by Mr Poopybutthole at the end of season 3, claiming that season four probably won’t be happening for a “really long time.”

Adult Swim made the same jest on Twitter early last year, tweeting:

“See you for Season Four in like a really long time #RickandMorty.”

All we know is that we’re hoping it’s soon but we would bet money on Season 4 being worth the wait.

Something Ricked This Way Comes

Butter robot: “What is my purpose?”
Rick: “You pass butter.”
Butter robot: “Oh my god.”
