Game of Thrones took the world by storm and it went on to win the most Emmys for a drama of all time, but the show we know and love looked very different when the pilot was pitched to HBO executives.

In an excerpt from EW editor James Hibberd’s Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Official Untold Story of the Epic Series, which is set to be released on October 6, the cast and crew revealed some behind the scenes secrets including how the plot was an epic fail.

They spoke about how everything from the actors’ hairstyle to the actor and major scenes had to be reconsidered.

Some of the biggest changes mentioned included Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Khal Drogo’s (Jason Momoa) wedding scene with Tamzin Merchant originally playing the role of Daenerys and that Daenerys jumped a fire on a horse. The couple also consummated the marriage by a brook in the original take.

Perhaps the biggest change was that Rickon Stark was almost not part of the series, “The biggest thing was Dan and David called me up and had the idea of eliminating Rickon, the youngest of the Stark children, because he didn’t do much in the first book. I said I had important plans for him, so they kept him,” George R.R. Martin revealed.

In the end, the show got the green light from HBO and the pilot had to be reshot, even though a lot of money and time was lost during filming.

If there are any Game of Thrones fans left out there, here is a look back on the biggest plot twists we never saw coming. Spoilers ahead (obviously).

1. Ned Stark’s Execution

For those watching the show who hadn’t read the book first, Ned Stark’s execution was the first shock twist of the series. It really seemed like Ned was going to be the series protagonist only his time on the show was cut short by Joffrey’s cruelty. Of course, we should have seen it coming given that Sean Bean took on the role of Ned.

2. The Red Wedding

Even more shocking was the slaughter of Rob Stark, his pregnant wife and his mother at his cousin’s wedding. At this point in the series, it starts to feel like there is just no way the “good guys” can win.

3. Hodor Hold’s The Door

In Hodor’s heartbreaking death scene, we learn the truth of why the only words he can utter are his name. We’re still not entirely sure we understand the warging time travel business but it was a clever twist nonetheless.

4. Jon Snow is a Targaryan

Finding this out was a big moment because it meant that a) Jon Snow has a claim to the throne and b) Daenerys and Jon Snow are related. While Jon was more upset about the later, the Queen of Dragons was caught up on the former.

5. Little Finger’s Execution

Little Finger’s execution was one that we never saw coming. For a moment there, it really seemed like he had succeeded in pitting Arya and Sansa against one another. Fortunately, he met his comeuppance instead.

6. The Night King Captures a Dragon

When Daenerys flies over The Wall to save Jon Snow and his companions, she loses a dragon to the Night King. This is tragic enough but when the dragon is resurrected as a soldier of the dead, winter comes knocking.

7. Tyrion Kills His Father

Tyrion spends the entire series getting walked over. We can think of no better person to take down his scheming, powerful father.

8. Wild Fire

By the end of season six, we actually start feeling sorry for Cersei. It seems that she has finally reached a sticky end. That is, of course, until she unleashes wildfire on all her enemies.

9. Daenerys Burns Down King’s Landing

Some of you may have seen it coming but we were desperately hoping for a happy ending. Shame on us.

10. Jon Snow’s Death

When Jon Snow is betrayed by the Night’s Watch, some of us were so distraught we had to take a day off work. The only thing more shocking than his death was when the Red Woman successfully brought him back.

Game of Thrones creators have finally explained the now-infamous coffee cup mistake.

In an interview with Japan’s Star Channel, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have finally talked about THE coffee cup that made an appearance in a shot during the fourth episode of the series’ final season.

“I think in Persian rugs, it’s tradition that you make a little mistake when you’re making the rug because only God can do anything perfect, so for us I guess that was just our [mistake],” Benioff said.

“That’s why I put the coffee cup there… a conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection,” Weiss quipped.

“We’re concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle,” Benioff added. “So at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was kind of embarrassment because, ‘How did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?'”

Even though disbelief was followed by embarrassment, the duo feel that they now can laugh the whole thing off.

”And then, eventually, it was just kind of funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now, you know?” he said.

George R.R. Martin has confirmed that he will not change his book ending based on the reaction to HBO’s final season of Game of Thrones.

The series has been one of the most talked-about shows of the decade. The utter devotion from fans put a lot of pressure on the show’s writer for the final season, which ultimately disappointed. In fact, fans were so upset with the way things wrapped up that a petition to remake season 8 reached one million signatures.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, George R.R. Martin, the man who wrote the novels on which the series is based, has revealed that he is not tempted to change his book ending based on fan reactions to the show. While previous seasons were based on his novels, the showrunners ran out of material for the final season, as the final book is still in progress.

“I want to write the book I’ve always intended to write,” Martin boldly declared.

“There is a temptation to change it — ‘Oh my god, it’s screwed up, I have to come up with something different.’” he said. “But that’s wrong. Because you’ve been planning for a certain ending and if you suddenly change direction just because somebody figured it out, or because they don’t like it, then it screws up the whole structure… I don’t read the fan sites. I want to write the book I’ve always intended to write all along. And when it comes out they can like it or they can not like it.”

There is still no release date in sight for the final book in the Game of Thrones series. Martin is in no rush to finish it now and has said: “There’s no longer a race. The show is over. I’m writing the book. It will be done when it’s done.”

Arya Stark is George R.R. Martin’s favorite character, and she is certainly one of the most heroic ones on Game of Thrones. She has had quite a journey since her arrival in King’s Landing and her sister, Sansa Stark, could certainly learn a thing or two from her adventures. And we certainly can too.

Be Proud of Who You Are…

Arya spent the best part of a season getting beaten so that she could become “a girl with no name.” By the end of her time with the Faceless God, however, she only became more sure of who she was. And it’s a good job she did, because it is Arya Stark that Winterfell needed to save the day when the ultimate battle came.

…But Always Be Humble

Arya played a crucial part in the Battle of Winterfell, but she did not proclaim herself a hero. After the battle, instead of celebrating with the others and being bathed in praise and thanks, she celebrated alone with a bow and arrow.

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Your Own Way

From the very first episode, it was obvious that Arya was special. Those around her expected her to learn how to sew and become a lady. She frequently replied with: “That’s not me.”

Instead, Arya learned how to fight with a sword, only she didn’t want to become a knight to defend her King. When the Hound mocked her technique, she embraced what the dancing master had taught her and became the greatest fighter of them all.

Know When to Change Course

Arya is very set in her ways, but she also understands when it is time to change course. She spent seven seasons plotting to kill Cersei, only when her time came, she took the advice of a good friend and chose something more important than revenge: her life.

Family Matters

Arya may be a bold, independent young woman, but she still understands the importance of family. She never betrays her siblings and avenges her mother and brother the first chance she gets. Even though she ultimately goes her own way, she sails off into the distance with a wolf banner proudly flying high. Because she will never forget who she is.

Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin is working on a new video game.

No matter how hard we try, we cannot let go when it comes to Game of Thrones. Whether it’s rumors about prequels, sequels or any other project the cast or writers may or may not be working on — we’re ready to report.

Naturally, we were excited to learn that the writer of the novels, George R. R. Martin, has been working on a new video game.

Although the game has nothing to do with Game of Thrones, it is still a thing of dreams for fantasy lovers. The game is called Elden Ring and is being created by the Dark Souls studio FromSoftware.

Martin said of the project, “Building the world of Elden Ring with Miyazaki and his team was a treat. The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what Elden Ring has in store for them.”

The “epic fantasy” has been directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and is anticipated for a 2020 release. You can watch the game trailer here:

Major season 8 spoilers alert.

Yes, Game of Thrones is over and yes, we were also bitterly disappointed in the ending. We haven’t yet managed to come to terms with losing our beloved Khaleesi and we still aren’t totally convinced by her character development.

So naturally, when a new theory comes along, we are still open to seeing what superfans make of the whole thing. And this theory, which compares
Daenerys to Stannis Baratheon as a way of foreshadowing the Mother of Dragon’s ending, is fantastic.

“Both were ‘the rightful heirs’ and were motivated by it, and considered the Iron Throne to be their right and duty,” the theory begins. “Both were linked to the element of fire, Stannis through Melisandre and her religion and Dany through her dragons. They both burned their enemies.

“Both helped Jon against the enemy to the north. Stannis helped against the freefolk and Daenerys against the Dead. Also they were both very influential figures for Jon. Both had their closest advisors betray them in favor of Jon Snow (Melisandre and Tyrion/Varys). And they both held Dragonstone as their base of operations.

“They both lost their parents, and two brothers. They were directly involved in the death of the younger ones. (Renly killed by Melisandre, Viserys killed by Drogo while Dany watched). Dany brought foreign forces of Dothraki and the Unsullied, and Stannis brought a foreign religion. These things made them look like outsiders to their enemies.”

After convincingly drawing parallels between the characters, the theory concludes: “I think this is not a coincidence, and Stannis’ fate was a warning of what will happen to Daenerys, and that being a rightful heir is not enough to be a good ruler.”

Thank you Reddit. You’ve blown our minds again.

Sunday’s Game of Thrones void was filled, much to fans’ delight, with a two-hour documentary on HBO’s acclaimed fantasy drama.

The documentary from British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay took fans behind the scenes of Game of Thrones’ cast and crew’s journey of making the eight and final season of the series.

Game of Thrones: The Last Watch chronicled David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s making of the final season of Game of Thrones, which however divisive, is nonetheless epically beautiful.

The docu really pulls the curtain on the show’s immense creative work, which includes a team of costumes, hair, makeup, and special effects people among others.

David Nutter, who directed three of season eight’s episodes, gave the creative team their much deserved credit saying he’s simply “a conductor of fine musicians who basically waves his arms around.”

According to production designer Deborah Riley, each hour filmed during the eight and final season of Game of Thrones cost $15 million or more. “All we were doing in seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7 were training for season 8,” Riley said.

The Last Watch also gave fans a look at the moment Kit Harington, aka Jon Snow, discovered that he was to slay his love and Queen, Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke. The footage of that final table read shows both actors get quite emotional of the fate of their on-screen love.

Of all the reviews I have written, this has got to be the most difficult. Perhaps this is why it has taken me two days to get here to write it.

After dedicating eight years to watching the show and investing emotionally in almost every character, the stakes were high for the season eight finale. Ultimately, the writers had an impossible task. There was no way to satisfy an audience who were all rooting for different things, but that didn’t mean they needed to give up on the series entirely.

The plot of the final episode itself was fine. We fully expected Daenerys to be killed and it seemed fitting that Jon would be the man to do it. We also knew that Arya would leave Winterfell and hoped that Sansa would become Queen of the North. Brandon Stark was low down on our list of choices for the Iron Throne, but after King’s Landing was burned down, it didn’t even seem that important.

What bothers me about the final episode is the fact that it seemed rushed. One-minute Tyrion is being held prisoner and five minutes later he is standing in a circle with the remaining lords and ladies, including Yara Greyjoy, who hadn’t made an appearance since the first episode of the season. Are there even ravens left to send the message out? The only indicator that time had passed was the growth of Jon and Tyrion’s beards. It genuinely felt like half an hour of showtime had been cut out.

What also bothered me was that the Dothraki and the Unsullied did not seem fussed that they had lost their Khaleesi. We would have expected them to tear down the remains of King’s Landing but even Grey Joy seems relatively calm about losing his queen. This is surprising for someone who raged so fiercely at the death of his beloved Missandei.

There were some touching moments in the episode and some things wrapped up nicely. Brienne coming to terms with Jamie abandoning her and recording his sacrifice was one of them and being named Hand of the King was a good ending for Tyrion. The Starks also finally got what they deserved, with Arya, Sansa, and Jon ending up where they had to be from episode one of the first season. The montage of each taking on their new positions with a slowed down version of the theme was emotional, but not as much as we expected.

I suppose really then it is our own faults for expecting too much. The writers had an impossible task of concluding each character’s story in just six episodes. Still, I can’t help but feel cheated that after watching each seed be planted, the characters stalks were cut short before they could fully blossom. As fans, we gave our hearts to the series and it feels like we deserved more.

That said, it doesn’t seem fair to demand the season be rewritten as many are petitioning. A lot of effort clearly went into the season and I still contend that episode three is one of the best pieces of television this decade, if not ever. It’s just hard not to feel a little disappointed when we were denied so much of what we wanted.

On the bright side, George R. R. Martin will likely make an awful lot of money from book sales next year as fans jump at the opportunity for an alternative ending.

With Game of Thrones tragically coming to an end, it is the perfect time to look over some of the series highlights, including a look at the show’s best couples. Here’s the best of the best.

*Spoilers alert for up to Season 8, episode 2*

Ned and Catelyn Stark

Ned and Catelyn were the couple that made it clear from the start that the Starks were the good guys. They were loyal, honorable and wonderful parents.

Daenerys and Khal Drogo

Daenerys and Khal Drogo’s relationship was passionate and deeply romantic. Together they demonstrated how love can grow when effort is put in.

Tyrion and Shae

We still don’t quite understand Shae’s role in everything that went down in King’s Landing but when they were together, Shae and Tyrion were an adorable couple.

Jon Snow and Ygritte

We love you Khaleesi but Ygritte and Jon had so much chemistry. This is hardly surprising considering the pair are actually together in real life.

Samwell Tarley and Gilley

Before Samwell met Gilley, he was frightened of everything. Now, he is still frightened of everything but he has reason to be brave.

Ellaria Sand and Oberyn Martell

Ellaria and Oberyn are easily the hottest couple of the series. They embraced liberal ideals of free love and pleasure.

Grey Worm and Missandei

Grey Worm and Missandei, on the other hand, are the cutest couple. They cannot make love and yet their relationship is deeply meaningful and passionate.

Ramsey Bolton and Myranda

Yes, we know Ramsey is the absolute worst but he shared a love of torture with Myranda and it reminded us of the Joker and Harley Quinn level of romantic sadism.

Arya and Gendry

Arya and Gendry have had a special relationship from the start but so far some of the best season 8 moments have been the sexual tension between the couple.

Jon Snow and Daenerys

Regardless of the fact they now both know they are related, Jon Snow and Daenerys are still fan favorites. Together, they could rule the Seven Kingdoms.. but will they?
