]]>Toby Emmerich, the chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said he’s excited to be able to continue Diana Prince’s story with the “real-life Wonder Women” Gadot and Jenkins after the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984.
This film opened in theaters on December 25th and grossed $85 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This is a pretty impressive number for 2020, especially considering you don’t even have to go to theaters to watch this superhero flick.
Wonder Woman 1984 also simultaneously premiered on HBO Max, where it found enormous success. WarnerMedia reported that “nearly half of the platform’s retail subscribers viewing the film on the day of its arrival, along with millions of wholesale subscribers who have access to HBO Max via a cable, wireless, or other partner services.”

]]>Gal Gadot will star as the eponymous heroine in the Patty Jenkins helmed feature.
The Israeli actress announced her casting on Twitter writing, “As you might have heard I teamed up with @PattyJenks and @LKalogridis to bring the story of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, to the big screen in a way she’s never been seen before. To tell her story for the first time through women’s eyes, both behind and in front of the camera.”
Paramount Pictures has won the film following a bidding war reportedly between Universal, Warner Bros, Netflix, and Apple.
The Egyptian queen’s tale was previously portrayed on the big screen by the iconic Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 Joseph Mankiewicz-directed film of the same name.

]]>The movie hails from Gadot and husband Jaron Varsasno, who have formed the production company Pilot Wave. The duo will produce alongside Marc Platt for Warner Bros.
The fact-based historical thriller tells the harrowing story of a woman’s defiant stand against Polish Nazi occupation and the incredible network she developed to care for and save 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto. Following her arrest by the Gestapo during the height of the war, the drama becomes a race against time to save not only herself but the identities of the hidden thousands who’ll face certain execution.
Gagot and Varsano said in a joint statement: “We want to help bring stories that have inspired us to life… Pilot Wave will create content that promotes the perspectives and experiences of unique people and produce impactful stories aimed at igniting the imagination.”

]]>The Wonder Woman star has joined Showtime’s upcoming limited series about Hedy Lamarr. Gadot will also executive produce the still untitled show about the film actress and inventor.
“The life of Hedy Lamarr was a truly fascinating one. She stood at the forefront of many issues that challenge women and our society today,” said Showtime’s President of Entertainment Jana Winograde. “In Gal Gadot, we have found the transcendent actress to portray the deeply complex Lamarr. And with the award-winning talents of Sarah Treem and Warren Littlefield, this is going to be a special series.”
The project is penned by The Affair scribe, Sarah Treem. She will also executive produce with Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo), Katie Robbins (The Last Tycoon) and Gadot’s husband Jaron Varsano (My Dearest Fidel).

]]>The sequel is not due to be released for another year, but DC Entertainment president and producer Geoff Johns has shared a teaser on Facebook.
The picture he shared is of the text “WW84” printed in flickering letters over a black background. No caption was given.
It has been hinted that the film will take place in the 1980s and will feature a Cold War narrative. The recent picture update seems to confirm that the movie will take place in ’84.
In other news, Kristen Wiig has been confirmed as the villain of the movie, Cheetah. Patty Jenkins, the director, shared on her Twitter:
“So excited to confirm the most thrilling news. Yes! It’s true. So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned.”
Jenkins, has also teased information about the upcoming movie. In an interview with Variety’s Playback, Jenkins said the second movie will feature another “great love story.”
“I did very much thematically want to get to love – because that’s what she stands for – and the complexity of what we’re facing,” she said of the first film. “These were big themes, like [Wonder Woman] stands for love and truth, which is particularly important right now.”
Wonder Woman 2 is set to be released on November 1st, 2019.
