]]>Buffy’s high school experience may have been unique but that is not to say that she is the only student to feel like her high school has been built on an actual hell mouth. What’s great about the show is that if you strip away all the demons, what you have left is something even more terrifying… adolescence.
The show demonstrates time and time again that everybody is battling with their own struggles. Even the “popular kids” will be going through something and no one is ever truly alone. If that fails to provide comfort, then there is always the season 4 reminder that eventually, high school will come to an end.
When Buffy’s first love turns into a soulless bloodsucking demon, she skips town and is convinced that her heart will never heal. Her relationship may have ended in the most heartbreaking way possible but slowly but surely, she recovers. Over the course of the show, Buffy has three serious relationships and several short romantic encounters. Each one brings its own painful challenges but Buffy stays strong and allows herself to love again.
Have you ever woken up and just though… what’s the darn point? Sometimes it feels like we are all alone in this world and that nothing really matters. Buffy reminds us that even if the worst is true, we have to keep fighting.
Midway through the controversial season five, Buffy’s younger sister, Dawn, is introduced to the Buffyverse to mask a cosmic key. When Dawn discovers she is not real, she falls apart. When those around her reassure her they don’t care about where she came from and love her anyway, she is eventually able to focus on what matters the most – looking out for her friends and saving the world.
Above all, Buffy reminds us that everybody has their weaknesses. Willow, a genius and extremely powerful witch, struggles with addiction. Spike, a powerful vampire finds himself at odds with the man he is and the man he wants to be. Buffy, on the other hand, is a super-strong slayer often tasked with saving the world. Time and time again she rises to the challenge, defeating the bad guys and proving that good will eventually triumph. But does it?
Even though Buffy always rises to the challenge, she has days where she resents her calling and wishes that she could quit. She has been known to have the odd tantrum and has bailed on her slayer duties once or twice. In season six, she experiences depression and finds herself making reckless mistakes and feeling detached from everyone around her. And that’s OK. Having these “moments of weakness” doesn’t make her any less strong and it certainly doesn’t make her any less of a slayer. In the face of struggle, Buffy faces her weaknesses, accepts them, and harnesses their power over her to transform them into strength. And in a nutshell, this is why we will continue to talk about Buffy The Vampire Slayer years after its initial release.

]]>What was superb about this character twist was that it’s the reverse of what we usually expect. Instead of it being revealed that Abigail is indeed a ghost, or Luke’s imaginary friend, it is a revealed in the shocking moment of her death that she has been alive the whole time.
The moment it is revealed that Violet has been dead since her “failed” suicide attempt at the start of the season is shocking every time. Her own shock when she sees her body makes the whole thing even more unsettling.
Throughout the whole episode, we believe that Kenny is a teen guilty of something we’ve all done. It’s horrible watching him jump through hoops to protect his reputation, and we are rooting for him the entire time. Of course, that all changes when we realize what he has really done.
When Spike is introduced in the second season, he’s the baddest vampire on the block. In season four, he gets a chip put in his head that stops him from harming any living things. Then in season five, he realizes he is in love with Buffy – the vampire slayer he spent the whole of season two plotting to kill.
In season one, Lorna seems to be one of the sanest, sweetest prisoners at Litchfield. In her backstory episode, we’re expecting her to be imprisoned unfairly like some of the other characters. This couldn’t be further from the truth. As it turns out, Lorna is one of the biggest pyschos in there, only now we love her even more.

]]>The post LGBT+ Pride in “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” appeared first on Entertainment For Us.
]]>Another great thing about the show is how progressive it was for its time and how relevant some of those storylines still are today. The first onscreen lesbian kiss happened on Buffy between Willow and Tara, but that’s not the only iconic moment of LGBT+ pride that came from the show.
Buffy coming out to her mom as the slayer
In season 2, Buffy is forced to confess to her mom that she is the slayer. The storyline cleverly parallels the experience many teens admit to having when they came out as queer to their own parents. Buffy’s mom just can’t get her head round the idea of her daughter being a slayer and even suggests that she tries “not being a slayer”. She then tells Buffy to not bother coming back if she does not give up her identity as the slayer and conform. Buffy cannot change who she is but once she comes to terms with it, she realises its something to be celebrated and those around her eventually come to understand and are ok with it too.
Willow realizing she is in love with Tara
Way back in season 3, the show hints that Willow could be gay through the arrival of her uninhibited vampire self. Not much more comes of the storyline until season 4, when Willow meets Tara with whom she shares an instant magical connection. Even though she loves Oz, Willow cannot deny that she has something special with Tara. Even her best friend Buffy initially struggles to understand. Nonetheless, Willow bravely follows her heart and becomes a part of the strongest and most likable couple in the entire series.
Once More With Feeling
And of course, that show-stopping musical episode which instantly became a cult classic is brilliantly queer in so many ways. It’s proof that Buffy The Vampire Slayer was never afraid to break the mould and boldly celebrates all kinds of character.
From vampires with souls, kind-hearted demons, a Jamaican slayer with a terrible fake accent and lesbian witches who help save the world, Buffy deserves to be honored for its contribution to media inclusivity and LGBT+ pride.

]]>Starring Drew Barrymore, Santa Clarita Diet revives the zombie concept and transforms it into something hilariously modern and original.
The drama series plucks its sinister characters from literary works from the 1800s. It’s captivating and very stylish.
True Blood is a raunchy and daring dark fantasy horror show about some very sexy vampires.
Supernatural follows two brothers as they hunt sinister and frightening monsters. It’s in its 14th season right now, so if you want a horror show that will keep you occupied for months, Supernatural might be a good choice.
Hannibal contains some incredibly gruesome murders, which are presented to us so artistically that we forget how horrible what we are looking at really is.
Stranger Things was the show everyone was raving about when it first came to Netflix in 2016. It’s incredibly well written and has some very creepy moments.
OK, it technically started in the 90’s, but Buffy ran into the 2000’s and was so forward thinking and relevant that it deserves to be on the list. Plus, it’s got everything from demons to vampires, ghosts and werewolves. Oh, and Buffy’s best friend is a witch.

]]>Holden Webster
Holden is the vampire who gave Buffy a short therapy session before she slayed him. He taught us a lot about Buffy and we kinda wish she didn’t stake him.
Harmony
Vampire Harmony makes several appearances and eventually moves across to Angel for series 5. She’s incredibly vexing, but she’s also kinda harmless (for a vampire).
Darla
Darla was way cooler on Angel than on Buffy, but she still makes it on the list.
The Anointed One
The Anointed One was so bad, he was good. He sat around in a dingy lair ordering his vampire followers around and came to a sticky end when Spike realized he wasn’t actually good for much.
The Master
The Master was the kingpin villain in season one of Buffy. He was both scary and brilliantly witty, showing us that the series is not one to be taken too seriously.
Angelus
Angel is so much better when he’s bad. Angelus is so evil that it’s darkly entertaining.
Dracula
The seductive Dracula cannot be left out of this list, even if he did only appear for one episode.
Drusilla
Drusilla made watching Spike plan to kill Buffy far more entertaining. Her fantasy vision and childlike persona mixed in with a healthy dose of blood lust put her near the top of this list.
Vampire Willow
We love Willow but Vampire Willow was something else. She’s wild, seductive and was the first clue in the series that Willow was gay.
Spike
Spike is not only the best vampire, but one of the best characters of the whole series. He’s cool, devious, hilarious and even has a sensitive side. Lovesick-poet-turned-evil-demon is one of the best and most dramatic character makeovers you can get.

]]>He might not be the most fun Buffy villain, but Gnarl makes it into the list on the creepy factor alone. The decrepit demon gets his kicks from slowly peeling off his victim’s skin with his nails and eating it… while his victim is still alive.
The Gentleman is one of the more avant-guard characters in Buffy. They steal the voices of a town so that no one can hear their victims scream. The big creepy smiles and black and white aesthetic make them one of the more nightmarish villains.
Once More with Feeling or what most of us know as “the musical episode” is a fan favorite and all-singing, all-dancing sassy demon “Sweet” has to make it on the list. Intent on taking Dawn back to hell to be his wife, he decides, in the end, to let the rules slide when he realizes it was really Xander who summoned him.
It shocked us all when sweet and innocent Willow, sent into a wild rage after her girlfriend’s death, becomes evil. After turning Tara’s murderer literally inside out, Dark Willow, mad with power, decides to take down the world. She looks pretty cool while she is doing it though.
We love the ‘Team Buffy’ Spike in the later seasons, but as a duo, you can’t get much cooler than Spike and Drusilla. Drusilla is one of the darker and more deranged vampires and Spike is the epitome of a badass. We’re just glad Joss Whedon didn’t kill of Spike at the end of Season 2 like he’d originally planned.
Who’s your favorite Buffy villain?

]]>Season 7
Although it wrapped things up well enough, the series could have really done without this season. It introduced a bunch of characters that we really had no investment in and then violated the whole principle of the show in that the slayer is the ‘chosen ONE’. Not only is this season bad, they should never have made it.
Season 5
We liked season 5, it had its good moments. Glory was a great villain and watching Spike fall in love with Buffy was a lot of fun. A lot of the focus of the season ended up being on Dawn though and we still can’t really get our heads around her sudden appearance in the show.
Season 6
If you’re a fan of ‘Spuffy’, season 6 is probably your favorite season. Things really heat up for the couple, especially in that scene and ‘Once More With Feeling’ is quite possibly the best episode of the entire series. Willow’s battle with addiction is an interesting subplot, especially as she has been a goody-two-shoes since season one. We just didn’t see the need for the writers to kill off Tara.
Season 1
Season 1 is surprisingly good considering it takes most shows a couple of seasons to hit their stride. We fell in love with the characters instantly and the Master is a great villain.
Season 4
Watching Buffy and Willow go off to college added a whole new flavor to the way the show parallels the struggles of growing up. The whole concept of Spike’s chip was great but some of the episodes were a little weak, ‘Bad Beer’ being one of them.
Season 2
Season 2 is the season we meet Spike and Drusilla and the show gets a lot more fun. It also introduces us to Oz as and Kendra and delves deeper into the Angel and Buffy love story. It’s definitely one of the best seasons of the series.
Season 3
We believe the series peaked at season 3. Faith might not be the most interesting anti-hero in terms of writing but Eliza Dushku makes a badass slayer. The Mayor is also a great villain, his random outbursts, and fear of germs adding a comical layer to his evilness. The season finale when the school burns down was climactic enough to end the series but it didn’t. The show continued to develop and teach us the value of friendship, responsibility and staying true to yourself in a world that makes no sense at all.

]]>Now, the reboot’s writer and showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen (Agents of SHIELD), decided to speak out and clarify the intentions she and the producers have for the show.
“For some genre writers it’s Star Wars. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars,” Owusu-Breen wrote in a note posted on Twitter. “Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay.”
“There is only one Buffy,” she continued. “One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel…They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to. But here we are, twenty years later…And the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer…And that’s all I can say.”
— monicaowusubreen (@monicabreen) July 26, 2018
According to reports, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has been in the works last fall. The idea is to make a show with a similar premise to the original but to have a black actress in a lead role. Still, the show currently doesn’t have a network or cast, and Owusu-Breen is still working on a script.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show run from 1997 to 2003 and received critical and widespread acclaim. It starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, a young girl who belongs to the line of fighters against forces of darkness known as “Slayers.” Besides being named one of the greatest TV show of all time, it has also gained a cult following over the years.

]]>Sex and the City
Ok, it might have gone on a bit too long, but Sex and the City is worth a re-watch – even if it’s just for the clothes.
Twin Peaks
David Lynch’s surreal mystery drama is still considered one of the greatest TV shows today.
Charmed
Ok, so some of it is pretty cheesy, but that’s also what makes it so great. Watching the super badass Charmed sisters fight demons while trying to maintain a social life stays at least a little bit entertaining all the way up to season 9.
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
We’re still singing along to the words of the theme song when it comes on at clubs, so we might as well just re-watch the entire series.
Will and Grace
This award winning comedy series is guaranteed to still get a laugh out of you today.
Beverly Hills, 90210
It’s one of the most definitive shows of the 90’s and the nostalgia makes it worth enduring.
The X-Files
The show is still great, but the ‘advanced’ technology the agents used to solve crimes adds a comical touch to the show in hindsight.
Seinfeld
Arguably still one of the best sitcoms to date.
Friends
It’s on Netflix and most of us have already found ourselves starting over from season one already. Friends is timeless.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The cult classic was forward-thinking at the time and still remains eerily relevant today. It’s also surprisingly relatable considering most of the show revolves around vampires and slaying.
