John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place and Netflix’s Bird Box were both great movies that were very similar in theme. Both were set in a post-apocalyptic world where the majority of the population has been wiped out. While in one world the characters must navigate their survival in silence, in the other they must navigate their survival blind. To make them even more similar, both feature a pregnant protagonist and pose the question of the difference between living and merely surviving for the sake of existence.

Consequently, we’ve decided to compare the two by putting them up against each other in three major categories.

Strongest Performance:

Winner: A Quiet Place

Reasoning: Although Sandra Bullock was fantastic in Bird Box, Emily Blunt’s performance in A Quiet Place had the edge. Both movie stars acted out giving birth in a post-apocalyptic scenario, but Blunt’s delivery of pure fear and pain when trying to go through the pains of labor in silence has got to be the winner. Unsurprisingly, Blunt won a SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for her overall performance in the film.

Scariest Concept:

Winner: Bird Box

Reasoning: This was a very close one, and you might well disagree with our reasoning here. To begin with, the chance of survival seems less likely in A Quiet Place given that the creatures can easily get in the house and will kill you instantly if you make even the slightest sound. The entity in Bird Box, meanwhile, cannot enter the home, so if you block the windows, you can use your vision freely. This would be fine if it weren’t for the crazy people running around trying to force everybody’s eyes open. Moreover, the fact that you can’t see the entity means there’s nothing to fight. At least in A Quiet Place they know what they’re running from.

Best Direction:

Winner: A Quiet Place

Reasoning: Although Bird Box was very well directed and was insanely tense and suspenseful, John Krasinski’s direction in A Quiet Place was spectacular. He successfully maintained a feeling of terror and suspense throughout the entire movie and for that reason, his masterpiece comes out on top.

Overall Winner: A Quiet Place

Netflix have shared the viewing figures for their chilling thriller movie Bird Box and gripping romantic drama show You. They have also revealed what this could mean for the future of the platform.

The show You was watched in 40 million households in the first month of release. Not only was it viewed by a large number, but it’s been one of the most talked about TV series of 2019 so far. With fans divided on the homicidal antihero Joe Goldberg, more and more people have been tuning into Netflix to join with the debate.

Even more impressively, 80 million viewers streamed the Netflix original Bird Box. With viewing figures like that, the need for buying the rights to stream movies made by other companies seems to lessen. In fact, the success of Netflix original content could lead to less 2nd-run programming.

“We are beginning to have our original movie offering mirror the success of our series offering for consumer enjoyment,” Netflix said in a statement to shareholders. “As a result of our success with original content, we’re becoming less focused on 2nd-run programming.”

The latest figures show that 137 million people subscribe to Netflix worldwide.

Yes, 2018 is over but that makes now the perfect time to look back at some of the best movies the year brought. Here are the top 10 horror films ranked from best to worst.

A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place is a horrifying, anxious horror flick which at its heart is a gripping monster movie. It’s unique, thrilling and unnervingly suspenseful.

Hereditary

What if evil could be inherited? The tale of the haunted house got terrifying again with 2018’s terrifying and unique horror Hereditary.

Bird Box

In this post-apocalyptic nightmare, nowhere is safe. Like The Quiet Place, Bird Box depicts what it is like to live in constant anxiety and fear.

Apostle

A brutal and bloodthirsty cult tale from Netflix, which didn’t disappoint.

Suspiria

Critics may be divided on this uncompromising remake, but whatever your thoughts might be, this radical re-imagining of Suspiria is bursting with insanity and horror.

Annihilation

Netflix’s surreal and unnerving sci-fi thriller pulls you into an uncomfortable world and gets under your skin.

Mandy

Nicholas Cage’s most recent movie appearance was surprisingly gripping with a healthy dose of violence and bloodshed.

Halloween

Michael Myers was gloriously terrifying in his return to the overdue Halloween sequel. Although it wasn’t quite as compelling as the original, it did bring closure to the franchise.

Insidious: The Last Key

The final installment of the Insidious franchise seemed to end the era of cheesy jump scares before we received a chilling run of terrifying post-apocalyptic terrors. Still, it was good fun and wrapped up the franchise nicely. Read our review here.

The Nun

The Nun hardly lives up to some of the other titles on this list but it was still entertaining and some people liked it. Read our harsh review here.

Sandra Bullock’s latest movie Bird Box is the tensest thing we’ve seem since A Quiet Place.

Director Susanne Bier’s Netflix thriller cuts right to the action. We’ve only briefly met Sandra Bullock’s Malorie and her sister Jessica (Sarah Paulson) when Jessica is brutally killed off. First, Jessica attempts to kill the both of them in a car accident, and when that doesn’t work, she steps in front of a truck, throwing a horrified look at her pregnant sister Malorie before being crushed to death.

Malorie has no time to mourn her sister. There is chaos all around as a suicide-inducing entity emerges, causing anyone who sees it to take their own lives. It is only thanks to the kindness of a stranger, who welcomes her into a safe house moments before climbing into a burning car, that Malorie is able to survive the day. Here, Malorie must wait out the end of the world with a group of strangers who are equally as shocked and confused as she is.

What is fantastic about Bird Box is that the end of the world is not the bit that’s terrifying. What gets under your skin is what life is like for those who survive. Sure, they made it off the streets and into the safety of the indoors, but they then face the prospect of starving. To get enough supplies, they must venture blindly back out into the world, fighting to avoid the entity. They succeed the first time, but when two survivors run off with the car, they have no idea what to do next.

The next problem they encounter is deranged survivors who refuse to wear blindfolds to protect themselves from the entity. It seems that mentally unstable people are not affected by the entity, and instead find it beautiful. They want everyone to see it too and force the blindfolded survivors to open their eyes, leading them immediately to end their lives. When one of these crazed survivors is invited to the house, it becomes clear that there will never be a moment of rest for Malorie and her newborn son and adopted daughter – both of whom she refuses to name.

From then on, there’s non-stop violence and unrest. We see Malorie and her children escaping down the river to reach a community of survivors. There are multiple moments where we tensely wait to see whether they all manage to make it, and against all odds they reach their destination.

The movie ends in the only way it could. There are no answers, and there is no new and improved world. The entity remains at large, and we still don’t understand exactly what it is or how it can be fought.

Nonetheless, when the three unlikely survivors stumble across the safe house and read the reassuring words “School for the Blind,” they finally find their hope.

To commemorate the opportunity for life after survival, Malorie at last names her children in a touching and beautiful moment of triumph.

Bird Box is a violent and horrifying thriller which throws the viewer into a world where it seems the only thing left to do is survive.
