Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Supergirl!

No longer hiding in the shadow of the numerous Superman movies which have been produced, it looks as though a Supergirl film is the works.

The character — whose real name is Kara Zor-El — is the cousin of Superman (aka Kal-El) and made her first appearance in Action Comics in 1959. She adopted the identity of orphan Linda Lee and lived in Midvale Orphanage.

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have already hired 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel to pen the script for the feature-length film, which will be the second featuring the superheroine.

The character was first brought to cinematic life in 1984 when she was played by Helen Slater in Supergirl which also starred Mia Farrow, Faye Dunaway, and Peter O’Toole.

It has not yet been confirmed whether Melissa Benoist, who portrays Supergirl on the CW series, will be donning the cape for the movie.
