The acclaimed filmmaker will not direct the fifth installment of Indiana Jones.
Variety was first to report that Steven Spielberg is handing the helming reins on Indiana Jones 5 to director James Mangold, who’s reportedly in talks to land the gig.
This is the first time in the franchise’s 39-year history that it won’t be directed by Spielberg.
Mangold’s directorial titled include Ford v Ferrari, Wolverine, and Logan.
According to a source, “The decision to hand over directing duties was entirely Steven’s,” adding that, “he felt now was the perfect time to let a new director and a new generation give their perspective to the overall story and this film.”
The new film written by David Koepp is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2021.
