“Night of the Hunter” Remake in the Works

Shelley Winters and Robert Mitchum in "The Night Of The Hunter" (1955)

Universal Pictures is remaking The Night of the Hunter.

The studio is remaking the 1955 adaption based on the novel by Davis Grubb.

While very little is known about the project, Variety has confirmed that the feature will be penned by Matt Orton (Operation Finale). The outlet, which was first to report the news, also reports that the film is expected to be a contemporary version of the original thriller, rather than a period piece.

The original starred Robert Mitchum as an evil religious fanatic, con man and murderer who marries a widow, and terrorizes her children to tell him where their dad hid the family’s fortune.
