NBA legend and activist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will be working with the History channel on a documentary about the African American experience during the Revolutionary War.

Black Patriots is the story of some of the most influential African American leaders from the Revolutionary War including Crispus Attucks, Peter Salem, Phillis Wheatley, and James Armistead Lafayette.

After retiring from the NBA, Abdul-Jabbar has been busy bringing awareness to African Americans throughout history that had an impact on American society. Abdul-Jabbar said, “‘Black Patriots’ chronicles the surprising, crucial, and often ignored role the black people played in the creation of our country.”

He continued, “Here’s something we never learned in school: George Washington said that African-Americans were pivotal to winning the Revolutionary War. From soldiers to spies to poets, black people were as much the founders of America as those who signed the Declaration of Independence.”

The documentary will premiere on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.
