Maleficent: Mistress of Evil wins the domestic box office with $36 million.

After a five year hiatus, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2014’s Maleficent is here, earning the top spot of the domestic charts.

The sequel starring Angelina Jolie grossed considerably less than the original, bringing in $36 million from 2,790 North American theaters, which is nearly half of what the original made during its debut weekend.

According to Variety, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil now marks the lowest opening weekend of the year for Disney.

“While it’s a lower opening than we had expected, we do think we have a good start for October with a great window leading into Halloween,” Disney’s president of global distribution Cathleen Taff said. “With great word of mouth, audiences will gravitate to the film.”

Also starring in the film are Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
