Armageddon Time created quite a splash when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and we finally know what the fuss is all about. Focus Features dropped the first trailer for this highly emotional family drama, starring Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, and Anthony Hopkins.

Armageddon Time is set in Queens, New York during the 1980s and it’s inspired by the upbringing of its writer and director James Gray. His previous filmography includes films Two Lovers and The Immigrant starring Joaquin Phoenix and The Lost City of Z and Ad Astra starring Brad Pitt.

His latest project is a deeply personal story that explores “the strength of family, the complexity of friendship, and the generational pursuit of the American Dream”. Irving and Esther Graff, played by Hathaway and Strong, are modeled after Gray’s parents, while Hopkins’ character Aaron Graff is inspired by the director’s grandfather.

The cast of this film also includes Banks Repeta, who plays a younger version of Gray himself, in addition to Jaylin Webb, Ryan Sell, Dane West, John Diehl, and Jessica Chastain.

Armageddon Time had its world premiere this spring at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with rave reviews and a seven-minute standing ovation. The rest of the world will get to see it on October 28, when it’s set to hit the theaters in the U.S.
