The nominations for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards were announced on Tuesday and while there were some repeat nominees and winners nominated, most of the categories had some surprises. Netflix has 160 nominations, which is the most of any network or streamer. Leading the nominations are HBO’s Watchmen with 26 nominations, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 20 nominations, Netflix’s Ozark with 18 nominations, and HBO’s Succession with 18 nominations.

There were also nominees that celebrated their first-ever nods including Cate Blanchett for her work in Mrs. America, Lupita Nyong’o for Serengetti, Octavia Spencer for Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, Anna Kendrick for Dummy, and Zendaya for Euphoria.

Some surprise nominations were The Mandalorian being nominated across multiple categories including Drama Series, Guest Actor in a Drama Series, as well as several Creative Arts nominations and Zendaya receiving a nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Rue in Euphoria, beating Nicole Kidman and Elisabeth Moss for a spot. We’re also surprised that What We Do in the Shadows and Normal People received nominations.

Some snubs we didn’t see coming were Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn not receiving nominations for their roles in Better Call Saul and Reese Witherspoon not receiving any nominations, even though she appeared in three series: Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, and Little Fires Everywhere. Like Witherspoon, Aaron Paul also had many opportunities to get nominated for his role in El Camino, Westworld, or Truth Be Told. We also expected Kaitlyn Dever and Merrit Wever, who starred in Netflix’s limited series Unbelievable, to receive nominations, but at least Toni Collete received a nomination for supporting actress and the show received a nod for Limited Series.
