Syfy recently delivered some crushing news to all fans of zombie apocalypse-themed shows out there. The network decided to cancel their zombie show Z Nation, which is wrapping up its fifth season. Now the season five finale will serve as the series finale as well.

The news was delivered to fans by the show’s executive producer David Michael Latt via a video posted on social media.

“We were not renewed for a season 6,” said Latt. “We’re stopping at season 5. We’re very sad. We’re also really grateful with the opportunities that we had. This is not the end of anything. This is just the beginning of a lot of things. We had a great time. We had a great time with Syfy.”

Syfy’s decision to cancel Z Nation didn’t come as a surprise, since the show struggled to attract viewers for some time now. While season one debuted with strong numbers, averaging around 1.5 million viewers, ratings went down with each following season.

While Z Nation won’t be around anymore, some of the people behind the show will be back with more exciting projects. The series’ co-creator Karl Schaefer is currently working on another zombie show for Netflix. Titled Black Summer, the series will be set in the same universe as Z Nation, but won’t feature any characters from the original.
