Westworld premiered on HBO in 2016, and it was set in a dystopian future where android hosts inhabit a fictional AI-powered theme park known as Westworld, frequented by wealthy guests who can explore their wildest fantasies without consequences.

Shortly after the show’s co-creator Jonathan Nolan expressed hope they’ll get to wrap up this story with the fifth and final season, HBO announced that Westworld won’t be coming back for another round. Following the show’s cancelation, Nolan’s and Lisa Joy’s production company Kilter Films released a statement describing Westworld as one of the highlights of their careers.

“We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond – in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so,” reads the statement by Kilter Films.

Westworld’s star-studded cast included Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, and Aaron Paul. The show’s cancelation comes as a huge shocker because several reliable sources reported the core cast had pay-or-play deals for Season 5 with HBO.

HBO has renewed the sci-fi series for season 4 ahead of the conclusion of season 3. An episode count and a release date have yet to be announced but considering the show was off the air for almost two years between seasons two and three, it’ll take a while. 

“From the Western theme park to the technocratic metropolis of the near future, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed every twist and turn from the minds of master storytellers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see where their inspired vision takes us next.”

Based on the 1973 film of the same name, Westworld was created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, and Jeffrey Wright.

The Emmy award-winning series is a “dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the birth of a new form of life on Earth,” according to Deadline. Season 3 will be eight episodes long and the theme will be “New World.” The series creator Jonathan Nolan said it’s inspired by Blade Runner and it will be filmed in some beautiful places around the world that capture the show’s future. “Dystopia can look pretty beautiful in the world. Just because the world is corrupt inside, doesn’t mean it can’t be smothered over and pretty. We wanted to find a version of dystopia that we hadn’t seen before,” Nolan said at Comic-Con.

Returning to Westworld Season 3 are Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores), Thandie Newton (Maeve), Ed Harris (the Man in Black), Jeffrey Wright (Bernard), Tessa Thompson (Charlotte), Luke Hemsworth (Stubbs), Simon Quarterman (Lee Sizemore), and Rodrigo Santoro (Hector Escaton). Aaron Paul, Vincent Cassel, Lena Waithe, Scott Mescudi, Marshawn Lynch, John Gallagher Jr., and Michael and Tommy Flanagan will join the show.

The first two seasons of Westworld were huge successes, receiving 42 Emmy nominations and winning three for the second season.

The new trailer for Westworld’s third season debuted at Wired25 in San Francisco on Saturday, but strangely it doesn’t feature any series regulars. 

Not Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, or Ed Harris, just a new tech company called Incite and its co-founder Liam Dempsey Sr. (Jefferson Mays).

Multiple outlets confirm that Vincent Cassel is set to join the third season of HBO’s hit sci-fi series. 

Per Westworld tradition, the nature of the Ocean’s Twelve and Jason Bourne alum is kept under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter reports that he is set to play a villain in the forthcoming season.

“We’re incredibly excited to work with Vincent Cassel,” creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy said. “We’ve been longtime fans of his and are thrilled for him to join the Westworld team.”

Cassel joins recently added Lena Waithe Aaron Paul who has boarded the show as series regulars. The Westworld cast includes stars Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Thandie Newton.

Season Three of Westworld isn’t expected to air until at least 2020.

She joins another big name added to the call sheet for the forthcoming season — Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad).
