]]>Davis received her very first Grammy nomination at this year’s ceremony, for the best audiobook, narration, and storytelling recording. She defeated the likes of Jamie Foxx and Lin-Manuel Miranda to win this prestigious accolade with her memoir Finding Me.
“I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola. To honor her life, her joy, her trauma, everything. And, it has just been such a journey – I just EGOT!” Davis said during her acceptance speech.
It took 22 years for Davis to achieve her EGOT status, and it all started with her Tony win for best featured actress in a play with King Hedley II in 2001. She won her second Tony for best leading actress in a play with Fences in 2010 and kept collecting awards once she broke into Hollywood.
She became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for best actress in a drama with her role in How to Get Away with Murder in 2015. She’s also the most-nominated Black actress in the Academy Awards history with four nods, and she received her Oscar for best supporting actress for a film adaptation of her Tony-winning play Fences.

]]>This year’s SAG Awards were quite historic because the four acting awards in the movie categories went to POC for the first time ever. The list of winners included Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom leads Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis, Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah), and Youn Yuh-jung (Minari).
Michael Keaton wasn’t in the running for any individual awards this season, but he still managed to make history at the SAG Awards. After picking up the trophy for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture with his The Trial of the Chicago 7 co-stars, he became the first actor to win in this category three times. This win improved Chicago 7’s Oscar chances, but it will still have a tough competition in Minari and Nomadland.
The Crown and Schitt’s Creek dominated the television field at this year’s SAG Awards, but it’s safe to say that the triumph of the first show is a much bigger deal. Unlike Schitt’s Creek, Netflix’s royal drama will be in the running at the upcoming Emmys and its SAG victories solidify its status as a major front-runner.

]]>Netflix dropped the trailer for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starring Viola Davis, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, and the late Chadwick Boseman. The film marks Boseman’s posthumous and last performance.
The film, a part of a major deal with Netflix to turn nine of Wilson’s iconic plays into films, was penned by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and directed by George C. Wolfe.
In Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, tensions and temperatures escalate throughout the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago.
During a press event, Davis said, “Chadwick was an artist. That’s who he was. He loved it. He demanded it in every single way. He was incredible.” Director Wolfe added, “Chadwick put his entire being into Levee. Levee demands that herculean scale of the role. He’s a phenomenal character. [Boseman] put every ounce of energy, heart, and passion [into it].”
