The original Lion King composer is hugely disappointed.

Elton John, who composed and performed a number of songs for the 1994 animated film, spoke with British GQ of the new iteration of the 1994 animated classic, revealing his disappointment from the new film’s “messed up” music.

“Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn’t have the same impact. The magic and joy were lost. The soundtrack hasn’t had nearly the same impact in the charts that it had 25 years ago, when it was the bestselling album of the year. The new soundtrack fell out of the charts so quickly, despite the massive box-office success.”

He continued saying that “the creative vision for the film and its music was different this time,” and that he wished that he would have been more involved. “I wasn’t really welcomed or treated with the same level of respect. That makes me extremely sad.”

Lion King banked more than $1 billion worldwide.

The Lion King presented itself as the anticipated film of the year and in many ways, it was. The Disney feature has been out for one week to date and has currently pulled in a whopping 968.5 million USD at the box office. It’s drawn in a new generation of young people and has had an old generation of Disney lovers returning. When it comes to money-making ideas, reviving the king of Disney classics has got to be the pinnacle.

Disney is currently in the process of reviving their old catalog with Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, Dumbo, Tarzan and Aladdin all receiving live-action remakes and plenty more being in the works. In terms of old Disney classics, The Lion King has got to be the most treasured and loved of the bunch, so did the remake live up to the hype?

The short answer is… yes. The feature is visually astonishing in every way. The Savanah landscapes take the audience’s breath away and the color palette brings Africa to life in a way the original never quite could. The animals are incredibly realistic and at times it is unclear whether we should be praising the cinematographers or shaking the hands of the animal trainers. In this respect, the film could not have been more successful nor spectacular.

In terms of the story, it’s already one we know and love. This time around, the narrative is more Shakesperean, notably staying truer to Hamlet, the play on which the film is based. The general tone is also darker and more compelling, with the comic relief element from Timon and Pumba feeling even more needed. So if the visuals are spectacular and the story was compelling, why are we left feeling like the live-action remake was a bad idea?

The truth is, by making the animals look undeniably realistic, some of the charm and the magic is lost. Instead of telling a fantasy story of talking animals, the film becomes more like a David Attenborough documentary where someone has dubbed voiceovers onto the animals. The human emotion that was exaggerated on the cartoon animals of the original, looks out of place on these utterly realistic creatures.

Ultimately, The Lion King remake really is sensational and yet we can’t help but feel a little disappointed. Perhaps it’s time we let go of the beloved Disney cartoon originals, now that the animation is so far behind what CGI can do now. Alternatively, perhaps Disney ought to realize that the magic of Disney was never found in its realism, but in its ability to take us out of the real world entirely.

The second The Lion King trailer is not getting the positive reaction that Disney had hoped for. The main problem? Their depiction of Scar.

In the Disney animated version of The Lion King, Scar is a menacing lion with a big black mane. In real life, black-maned lions are more aggressive, hence why this depiction was chosen for the villain of the film.

In the new trailer, however, Scar’s black mane is no more. He looks far smaller in size than Mufassa and the pompous, villainous expression is nowhere to be seen. Naturally, fans have been quick to pick up on this.

One fan tweeted: “I’m all for the lion king remake, (mostly because of Donald Glover), but these two pictures highlight how having live-action cartoon characters restricts the portrayal of emotion, I mean just look at the picture of scar in the original photo compared to the new one.”

Another said: “OG Scar: evil and pompous as hell.. remake Scar: a ratty looking lion I guess.”

The first full trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King is finally here.

Despite being a brief trailer, that is less than two minutes long, we can now all rest assured that the remake is a very realistic nearly almost shot-by-shot take on the classic 1994 animated film (because who would want it any other way)?

The film, directed by Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book), features a star-studded cast to bring back Simba to the big screen. The voices include Donald Glover (Simba), Beyoncé (Nala), Seth Rogan (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar), John Oliver (Zazu), and James Earl Jones (returning to voice Mufasa).

The trailer features scenes from Simba’s birth and the African savannah, Simba, and Nala exploring the elephant graveyard, Simba’s exile at the encouragement of his uncle Scar and a glimpse of Simba, Pumbaa and Timon singing together.

The Lion King joins a number of Disney classics that got the live-action treatment including The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast and most recently Dumbo. The next Disney live-action remake to hit theaters is Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin.
