The CW canceled some of its most beloved shows in the past few months, and it’s showing no signs of stopping. The Flash is set to run his final race next year, as the network confirmed that the ninth season of this show will also be its last.

The Flash premiered in 2014 as a spinoff of Arrow and quickly became one of the CW’s biggest ratings hits. It helped set up the Arrowverse, but many of the shows in this franchise were canceled before it, leaving room for Superman & Lois and the upcoming Gotham Knights.

Despite being one of the network’s biggest hits, the cancelation of this superhero show doesn’t come as a shocker. The CW’s financial struggles are now public knowledge and we’ve watched them cancel many legacy shows, such as Dynasty and Riverdale, in the past few months.

The showrunner Eric Wallace doesn’t see the show’s cancelation as a tragedy, and he’s proud that his cast and crew made it this far.

“Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor, and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race,” said Wallace in a statement.

Grant Gustin will return as Barry Allan/The Flash in the final season, which is set to premiere on the CW in 2023 and feature a total of 13 episodes.

With all the uncertainty surrounding the DC Extended Universe, it isn’t surprising to see fans losing hope about some of the projects surrounding prominent DC superheroes.

One of them is The Flash solo movie, which was announced back in 2014 and is still far from making it to the theaters. But, according to Ezra Miller, who starred as Barry Allen/The Flash in previous DC movies, the movie is definitely happening and it will be a feature all comics fans will enjoy.

Miller was recently asked in an interview about the progress on The Flash solo movie. While the 26-year-old admitted that the production is a bit late, he said the reason for this is that everyone involved into the project wants to make one of the “greatest superhero movies of all times.”

The Perks of Being a Wallflower star also offered some details about the movie, saying that it will spark “a whole new universe” and should connect the “disparate pieces” of the DC film universe.

“We’re talking about sparking a whole new universe, it’s not just the DC multiverse, it’s the speedster multiverse,” said Miller. “And the speedsters are the ones who connect all the disparate pieces of it. ‘Cause Marvel is a universe, right? It’s a world with all the same characters in it. DC is a multiverse — all these different stories with different realities, different characters and different versions of characters. And the speedsters are the ones who move through it all.”

You can watch the interview below.

Despite the success of Wonder Woman and Aquaman, Warner Bros. decided to rethink their strategy regarding the DC Extended Universe which causes a lot of delays in several projects. Several actors also decided to move on from their roles including Henry Cavill, who stepped down as Superman and Ben Affleck who won’t return to portray Batman.

In addition to the Arrowverse shows, Riverdale, Charmed, Dynasty, and Legacies will also get an additional season, while Supernatural will be returning for its 15th season.

The news about the renewals for these 10 shows was delivered by The CW’s President Mark Pedowitz during the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.

“This season, we expanded our primetime schedule to six nights with the addition of Sunday — which has been an unqualified success for the network, our affiliates and our advertisers. In addition to growing our schedule across the week, we also continue to add more year-round programming. The early renewal of these signature CW series gives us a head start on laying out the 2019-2020 season, and this is just the beginning,” said Pedowitz.

“These shows provide a strong foundation for our multi-platform programming strategy, and we look forward to building on this with even more returning and new shows as we approach the May upfront.”

Further details regarding the renewals, including the episode count and possible series’ endings, will be revealed in May. This is when the network will also determine the fate of The 100, Roswell, New Mexico, All American and In the Dark. After Justice League failed, Warner Bros. is taking some extra time to work on future DC Extended Universe movies. The latest movie to get pushed back is The Flash standalone movie, which was supposed to start filming in March 2019 with Ezra Miller returning as the titular character. Now, according to Variety, the movie will enter the production in late 2019 with the release date being set for 2021.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. isn’t happy with the current script and decided it needs some reworking, which ultimately caused the delay of production. Also, Miller is currently starring in the Fantastic Beats film series, with the filming of the third installment set to begin in June 2019. This would cause scheduling problems, so the studio went with the safe route.

The Flash standalone movie has been in development since 2013, when Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon) was initially hired to write the script. After the Berlanti’s writing didn’t get the green light, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie) were brought in to write and direct in April 2015, but the duo departed the project shortly. Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) were also working on the movie at one point.

Finally, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the duo behind 2018’s comedy Game Night, were hired as directors in March 2018.

The Flash isn’t the only planned movie from DC Extended Universe that is delayed. The studio also decided to shelf the Cyborg standalone movie for the time being, while there is also no news on when Black Adam and Green Lantern Corps. movies, as well as Matt Reeves’ The Batman trilogy, could enter the production.

If you’re a fan of TV shows from the DC Universe, you’re in luck, because the CW just dropped trailers for all of its returning Arrowverse shows at this year’s Comic Con in San Diego.

Check them out below along with some tidbits of information about the new seasons for each show from the Comic Con panels!

Arrow

With Oliver Queen now in prison with many of the bad guys he had a hand in putting away as the Arrow, actor Stephen Amell promises that at the beginning of the season “there’s nothing about him that’s heroic, at all.”

“There’s one scene in particular in the premiere [in which] what Oliver does is kind of reprehensible, and that’s interesting,” Amell teased.

Actor Colton Haynes, who plays Roy, praised new showrunner Beth Schwartz: “It’s the best spin that’s been put on the show since the show started. Having the female energy and female directors and female characters [feels] really special.”

The Flash

“There’ll be a lot of deaths this season,” executive producer Todd Helbing told the fans at The Flash panel on Saturday.

He also discussed the big bad of the new season, Cicada, played by Chris Klein (American Pie). Helbing said unlike in the comics, Cicada is “not so much a cult leader,” but “his powers present a challenge for Team Flash that they’ve never had to deal with before.”

And fans of Tom Cavanaugh have a reason to rejoice, as we will once again get a new portrayal of Wells from him: Sherloque Wells, who is “a very intelligent human being who is maybe not to be trusted,” according to Cavanaugh.

Supergirl

While much of the last season of Supergirl was spent on the question of how to balance Kara Danvers and Supergirl and who Kara wanted to be more, featuring actress Melissa Benoist more in her blue spandex suit than out of it, it seems like the new season will bring back Kara the journalist.

“Kara Danvers the reporter is going to be as big of a hero this season as Supergirl,” according to executive producer Jessica Queller.

“Last year, we were in outer space a lot. This year, we wanted to make the show a little more grounded. We wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on some of the things that are happening in our world,” EP Robert Rovner explained.

The show will also feature a new character, Nia, the first-ever transgender superhero on TV. Actress Nicole Maines describes her as “so wide-eyed” and “so pure.”

“She’s worked for Cat Grant in Washington, D.C., and she’s been sent to National City,” where Kara takes her under her wing as both a reporter and superhero. “She has this ferocious drive to protect and to fight against discrimination. She’s the superhero we need right now.”

Legends of Tomorrow

The Legends will see several big changes this year, as neither Firestorm nor Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) are coming back following the death of Professor Stein (Victor Garber), who is one half of Firestorm, and the decision of the other half, Jefferson (Franz Drameh) to go off on his own.

The good news is that Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who played Amaya, will be coming back, but as a new character named Charlie who slipped through the portal opened at the finale of last season.

Black Lightning

And a bonus trailer which is not part of the Arrowverse, but part of the DC Universe superhero lineup on the CW, Black Lightning!

Another DC Comics-inspired TV show is coming to The CW. The network has announced on this week that the Batwoman television series is officially in the works.

Greg Berlanti, who has his fingerprints all over The CW’s Arrowverse, will be tasked with developing the series, while Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) will pen the script.

The character of Batwoman will be introduced at The CW’s annual DC series crossover event scheduled for December.

This will be the first time the character is featured in the live-action form. The actress that will portray the role is still to be determined.

Alongside the announcement, The CW also revealed the official synopsis for the series:

Batwoman revolves around Kate Kane, who, armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet: in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

Batwoman will join other DC Comics-based series at The CW, rounded up in the shared universe called Arrowverse, which include Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning.
