This captain doesn’t give a f**k about America.

A post shared by The Boys (@theboystv) on

Homelander is the patriotic, omnipotent leader of The Seven. He can shoot lasers from his eyes, fly, see-through walls, read a heartbeat. He is essentially Superman meets Captain America only instead of omnibenevolence, we have a man that has little respect for human life. It quickly becomes clear that Homelander has the power to do whatever he wants and the only thing holding him back is Madelyn Stillwell. Madelyn is like the money-grabbing equivalent of Nick Fury, except instead of helping the Avengers save the world, she is using her sexuality to manipulate Homelander into making her cold hard cash.

The parallels between the rest of The Seven are also pretty obvious. The faster-than-light A-Train is a reputation-obsessed Quick Silver, Deep is Aquaman, Black Noir is a darker-still Batman, and Queen Maeve is a clone of Wonder Woman. Her costume is practically a replica of Gal Godot’s and she represents the strong, female figure. Of course, in The Boys, the strong female figure has little substance. Queen Maeve answers to her superiors and when it comes down to actually saving people, there’s not much she can do when Homelander tells her it is time to go home. She is essentially a collection of superhero powers in a flattering costume.

These parallels work to critique MCU and DCEU in a multitude of ways. The Boys explores the concept of collateral damage, reputation, and a darker reality of what a world with superheroes would actually be like. Although some of these concepts are touched on in Captain America: Civil War, The Boys takes them to extremes. It does this so effectively that we can’t help but look at characters like Quick Silver and wonder whether he ever accidentally ran through someone’s girlfriend.

Finally, if we’re going to get really “meta” about it, The Boys challenges the audience’s obsession with superhero culture. The Avengers alone has pulled in billions of dollars in cinema sales and Marvel Studios is currently valued at just shy of $5 billion. MCU hashtags are often trending on Twitter, just like The Seven trend in The Boys. Marvel and DC are literally dominating the box office and it’s our obsession with superheroes that allows it to happen. We’re not saying that Marvel is equivalent to Vought International, but perhaps we ought to be a little more skeptical when buying into the shiny, polished superhero dream. I mean seriously Captain America, nobody can be that perfect.

After Justice League failed, Warner Bros. is taking some extra time to work on future DC Extended Universe movies. The latest movie to get pushed back is The Flash standalone movie, which was supposed to start filming in March 2019 with Ezra Miller returning as the titular character. Now, according to Variety, the movie will enter the production in late 2019 with the release date being set for 2021.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. isn’t happy with the current script and decided it needs some reworking, which ultimately caused the delay of production. Also, Miller is currently starring in the Fantastic Beats film series, with the filming of the third installment set to begin in June 2019. This would cause scheduling problems, so the studio went with the safe route.

The Flash standalone movie has been in development since 2013, when Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon) was initially hired to write the script. After the Berlanti’s writing didn’t get the green light, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie) were brought in to write and direct in April 2015, but the duo departed the project shortly. Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) were also working on the movie at one point.

Finally, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the duo behind 2018’s comedy Game Night, were hired as directors in March 2018.

The Flash isn’t the only planned movie from DC Extended Universe that is delayed. The studio also decided to shelf the Cyborg standalone movie for the time being, while there is also no news on when Black Adam and Green Lantern Corps. movies, as well as Matt Reeves’ The Batman trilogy, could enter the production.

There’s always been a healthy bit of competition between Marvel and DC and things just got spicier.

On his Fat Man on Batman podcast, Christopher Markus, one of the Avengers: Infinity War writers said:

“I would look at what Marvel did out of necessity in that they didn’t have their A-list characters.

“They didn’t have Spider-Man, they didn’t have the X-Men, and they went down the line and found a – I mean, he’s pretty f**king famous, he’s Iron Man, but he wasn’t then – and they made a really good movie out of him.

“I might put Batman and Superman and everybody else, I mean Wonder Woman is doing fine, aside for a second, go through the vast world and go, ‘That guy’ or ‘That girl,’ and go, ‘Let’s just make a really good movie and not a universe and see what happens.’

“There’s a lot of spaghetti being thrown at the wall.”

The Marvel franchise is extremely successful, with Infinity War recently becoming the fourth highest grossing movie all time. On the other hand, the recent Justice League was the worst performing DC movie at the box office.

Marvell have dropped several Deadpool 2 trailers over the past few months, but here is the final trailer before the movie is released on May 18th.

The new trailer shows more action and introduces us to several new characters for the first time. It looks as if Deadpool (Ryan Renalds) is putting together something of a supergroup (or rather a “super duper f***ing group”) to help take down the movie’s enemy, Cable (Josh Brolin).

The trailer has kept in trend with the previous teasers, reminding us the Deadpool movies do not take themselves too seriously. In the trailer, Deadpool makes a dig at the upcoming Avengers movie, Avengers: Infinity War, by referencing the movie’s super-villain, who is intent on wiping out half the universe. Deadpool jests: “Pump the hate breaks, Thanos.”

The unlikely superhero also makes a dig at DC, which has been criticized by Marvell fans for being too dark and depressing. In a quip against Cable, Deadpool says: “So dark — are you sure you’re not from the DC universe?”

The movie is expected to fair well at the box office. The original film grossed a whopping $783 million worldwide, which earned it the status of the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

In addition to Bumblebee, Hodson has previously written the 2017 thriller Unforgettable starring Rosario Dawson as well as Shut In starring Naomi Watts.

Joss Whedon was previously employed to write Batgirl but decided to step away, as he did not have any ideas.

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC are such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon said in a statement to EW at the time. “I’m grateful to Geoff [Johns] and Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I… uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?”

Rumors began to swirl that Whedon would be parting ways after Justice League failed to live up to expectations.

The movie will revolve around Barbara Gordon, who is the daughter of Gotham Police Commissioner James Gordon.
