As the 2010s draw to a close, it’s time to look back at the TV series that defined the decade. With a 9.5/10 rating on IMDB, there’s no arguing that the critically acclaimed American TV drama Breaking Bad made its mark. But is it decade-defining?

When the show first aired in 2008, audiences were captivated by the uniqueness of the plot. This was not the story of Pablo Escobar, it was the story of a high school chemistry teacher with cancer and how he came to run his own meth empire. It was Vince Gilligan’s answer to the question of how an ordinary person breaks bad. And we were all hooked.

As the series unfolded, Gilligan boldly paved the way for character-driven TV. Yes, Breaking Bad is filled with action and shock factor, but what makes it so compelling is our fascination with the characters – our fascination with Walter White. By the time Breaking Bad wrapped up in 2013, shows with weak protagonists no longer made the cut. Gilligan raised the bar by satisfying our craving for interesting characters with stories we had never heard before. Masterpieces like Suits and House of Cards would follow.

When Breaking Bad wrapped up, we were offered Better Call Saul. This was Gilligan’s prequel that was even more character-orientated than the original series. Episodes were slow-paced, deliberate, and meticulously crafted. Fans became just as fascinated and obsessed with B-character Saul Goodman’s story as they had been with Heisenberg’s. This is what a prequel should be – something that adds to the story rather than clings helplessly to the bones of the original. It keeps the Breaking Bad fantasy alive for fans while offering more layers to a story that we thought had already finished.

Finally, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul proved that television doesn’t need to be full of epic moments to satisfy audiences. In an era where the TV golden rule seemed to be “the bigger, the better”, Gilligan offered us the infamous bottle episode, “Fly”. The episode stripped back the drama and followed Jessie and Mr. White in a single room, searching for a fly. This wasn’t a final-showdown moment but the opposite. It was a magnifying glass to Walter’s mental state and his diminishing relationship with Jessie. Gilligan massively slashed the budget for the episode, and yet many critics consider it to be one of the best. Breaking Bad thus proved that things don’t always need to be ‘kicking off’ so to speak for television to be interesting.

And in a nutshell, that’s how Breaking Bad raised the bar and became the most iconic TV show of the decade.

Six years may have passed since the Breaking Bad finale, but El Camino picks up the second that Season 5 left off. Jesse has just escaped from enslavement by Jack’s gang and minutes later, his cat and mouse chase with the police commences.

The timeline of the film follows Jesse in the days following his escape. Aaron Paul gives his greatest performance yet as he portrays the paranoia and PTSD his character is experiencing. To begin with, it’s not clear what Jesse’s endgame is but eventually, we learn that his plan is to gather enough money to buy the disappearing service to Alaska.

As a standalone film, El Camino is not particularly action-packed and the storytelling falls short of a masterpiece. Scenes often jump from one to the next and Jesse seems to use up his nine lives by the end of the feature. Aside from random flashbacks, the Breaking Bad story is not really built on. Insignificant characters are brought back and the loose ends that are tied up are loose ends that El Camino created.

Of course, most of the significant characters from the series were killed off in the final season and so Vince Gilligan did not have much to play with. Bringing the characters back in the form of flashbacks may have been what fans wanted but these flashbacks are often contrived. The character whose story is built on the most is Todd, who is brought back to be made even more dislikable. This adds little to the Breaking Bad canon other than his death being made more satisfying in retrospect.

Visually, El Camino cannot be flawed. The cinematography falls in the same class as Gilligan’s signature direction in both Breaking Bad and the spin-off, Better Call Saul. There are also a couple of scenes that nod to moments in the series. For example, Jesse picks up a bug and examines it, referencing his gentle nature via a nod to an insignificant Breaking Bad moment.

As a whole, it is not yet clear whether El Camino has added anything of significance to the Breaking Bad canon. Perhaps Better Call Saul will revisit Jesse’s storyline and the contents of his letter to Brock may be revealed. Other than that though, there were no mic drop moments and ultimately, El Camino is Jesse’s humble opportunity to get his own swan song. We just wish we knew what happens to Jesse next.

Aaron Paul would love to star in the upcoming Breaking Bad movie but he hasn’t heard anything about it.

It was announced last year that a film titled “Greenbrier” was scheduled to film in Albuquerque, New Mexico from November to February. The film is being directed by Vince Gilligan and is anticipated to wrap up unfinished storylines from the iconic TV show Breaking Bad. We’ve all been hoping that the movie will follow up on Jesse Pinkman’s life post-Walter White. According to Aaron Paul though, he has no idea what the movie will be about.

“Rumors are funny — I once heard a rumor that I was being cast as Han Solo,” Paul announced at the Sun Valley Film Festival, according to Variety. “I haven’t heard anything about the Breaking Bad movie but if there is one and it comes together I’d love to be a part of it.” “If it were to happen, yes, I would love to do it.”

He continued: “In case you haven’t caught up on the TV series, Walter dies, so….it has to star Jesse.”

The official description of the movie states: “‘Greenbrier’ tracks the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.”

More details will be shared when they are announced.

Spin-off series were a common occurrence in the world of television in the past, but nowadays it seems like this trend is even more popular. Just having one spin-off isn’t enough these days and several shows like ABC’s popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, The CW’s The Vampire Diaries and teen drama Pretty Little Liars, went on to inspire two spin-offs each in recent years.

Although most of these spin-offs are not worthy of your time, some of them manage to retain the quality of the original. Don’t worry; you won’t have to use the hit-and-miss method to find them, since we did the dirty work and brought you the five best TV spin-off shows of all time that you should watch. Let’s get going.

CSI: Miami

Original: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

While CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation inspired countless spin-offs, CSI: Miami remains the most popular and, if we dare to say, the best one. The series follows the group of detectives, led by Lieutenant Horatio Caine (David Caruso), who are using modern technology and unconventional methods of investigation to crack the most complicated cases.

Family Matters

Original: Perfect Strangers

Focusing on Perfect Strangers‘ character Harriette Winslow and her family, Family Matters was one of those shows that managed to become more popular than the original. It was a big rating hit with 215 episodes being aired from 1989 to 1998.

Better Call Saul

Original: Breaking Bad

The youngest entry on our list of best TV spin-off series of all time, Better Call Saul is based on Breaking Bad character Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk). It focuses on Goodman’s life before events in Breaking Bad, and has met with similar critical acclaim as the original series.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Original: Star Trek: The Original Series

Premiering 18 years after the original, Star Trek: The Next Generation follows a new generation of Starfleet officers led by the now-iconic Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who embark on a mission to explore the unknown parts of space. It is now considered one of the greatest television shows of all time.

Frasier

Original: Cheers

The last entry on our list of best TV spin-off series of all time, Frasier, sees Cheers‘ character Dr. Frasier Crane leaving Boston and returning to his home town of Seattle, where he is trying to reconnect with his father and brother. It went on to become one of the most acclaimed and popular sitcoms of all time and winning 37 Emmy Awards during its 11-season run.

Bryan Cranston has confirmed that there really is a Breaking Bad movie in the works.

Rumors started circulating earlier this week that Breaking Bad creator Vince Gillgan had plans to create a followup movie based on the series. Sources have suggested that the working title is Greenbrier and that it will be set in the world of the BB franchise.

In an interview on The Dan Patrick Show,Bryan Cranston, who played the infamous Walter White on the show, finally addressed the rumors and confirmed them to be true.

“I’m sorry I didn’t hear the question,” he joked. “Yes, there appears to be a movie version of Breaking Bad, but I honestly have not even read the script.”

Although Cranston knows little about the movie, he has expressed his enthusiasm of re-joining the cast, if he is asked. He described Vince Gilligan as a genius and confirmed that if it came down to it, he would undoubtedly resume his role as Walter White in the movie.

“I don’t know if it is an appearance, or what kind of appearance. Flashbacks or flash forwards, I have no clue. But I’m excited about it. It was the greatest professional period of my life, and I can’t wait to see all the people again,” he explained.

Cranston also confirmed that the new movie will aim to wrap up unfinished story lines of the characters in the series. That means we might finally find out what happens to Jesse Pinkman…

Another Breaking Bad cameo has made its way into Better Call Saul (BCS).

Since the prequel started, BCS has featured numerous Breaking Bad characters. The list includes fan favorites such as Mike Ehrmantraut, Gus Fring, and Hector Salamanca as well as less regular Breaking Bad characters like Lydia, Tuco and Crazy 8.

In “Something Beautiful”, Vince Gilligan added another fantastic cameo to the series. Dorky, lovable and almost innocent chemist Gale Boetticher was added in a short scene when he complains to Gus about the poor quality of some drugs he has been testing.

Although the scene was short, it symbolizes a small step closer to Breaking Bad’s timeline. Fans are speculating whether the series will end when Breaking Bad starts, meaning Walter White and Jesse could potentially make appearances.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gilligan said of this possibility: “I desperately want to see both of them on Better Call Saul. Peter [Gould] wants it, the writers do, the actors do.

“It wouldn’t feel as satisfying if it was just a cameo or an Alfred Hitchcock walkthrough,” he continued. “I think we’ve waited long enough. We damn well better have a good reason for them to show up. I just hope we figure it out because I’ve got to hear, ‘Yeah, bitch!’ one more time.”

Bob Odenkirk has said he wasn’t sure about Better Call Saul at first and that he dislikes the character of Saul Goodman.

In an interview with EWOdenkirk who plays Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, said he thought the show was a “huge risk” and that he doubted that Saul was likable enough as a character for the Breaking Bad spin-off to work.

“I always thought it was a huge risk, and all I wanted was them to do it for their own reasons, and not because I asked them to do it or pressured them to do it,” he said. “So I basically backed off every single time it was suggested to me. I think Vince might have thought it was kind of weird to suggest to an actor, ‘What if I create a show for you?’ and have that actor look at him and go, ‘I dunno. It’s your free time. Do what you want with your time.’

“My first question when we talked was, ‘How do you make him likable?’ Because I didn’t like that guy. I mean, I like watching him—like a car wreck when you’re not in it. It’s intriguing. It pulls you in. But he’s a bad guy.”

He also spoke about the upcoming season and emphasized that he is reluctant for his character to become Saul:

“I’m having to confront the fact that he is becoming Saul, and I don’t like Saul,” he shares. “If he was my friend, I would say, ‘Don’t go that route.'”

Season 4 of Better Call Saul will premiere on August 4th.

Breaking Bad star opens up about the one scene she won’t watch.

The Emmy-winning TV series contains several shocking moments, some of which were more difficult to watch than others. Betsy Brandt, who played Hank’s wife Marie, has admitted that there is one scene she still hasn’t watched and doubts she ever will.

The scene is in season five episode “Ozymandias,” when Hank is shot by Jack’s crew after they turn up to save Heisenberg.

“I still have not seen that scene, because I…just can’t…watch them drag you. And I just can’t…I just can’t,” she revealed to EW.

“I get that it’s pretend. It’s not like I text like Marie all day and expect you guys to show up at my house wearing purple… It was so fun to be a part of that relationship, because they were, you know, flawed, maybe, but such good people — and to be part of the love.

“And I just thought, ‘Hank should be in the world,’ you know? The world is better off with some people in it, and he’s one of them. Like, he should’ve been in it. And I still, I just – I can’t watch it.”

We feel the same way, Betsy!

Better Call Saul Season 4 is finally on its way. Here is everything you need to know about the new season.

Season 3 spoilers ahead.

When?

AMC has confirmed that season four will premiere this summer. The release date is August 6th in US.

We can reasonably expect the trailer pretty soon, given that it usually airs three months before the upcoming season premieres.

Who?

Bob Odenkirk will return as Jimmy McGill, along with Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler and Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut.

We will be seeing more of Giancarlo Esposito as Breaking Bad‘s freakishly calm and collected villain Gus Fring and the spooky Salamanca cousins, Leonel and Marco, will return with Daniel and Luis Moncada.

It’s very possible that we’ll see the return of more Breaking Bad characters such as Hector Salamanca (Mark Margolis) and Lydia (Laura Fraser) who made appearances in season 3.

It has also been confirmed that a new “very important character” will be entered into the show. A man called Lalo is referred to in Breaking Bad when he first meet Saul.

“[Other than Lalo], we have a couple of new characters that we’ll be reintroducing to the world. We probably don’t want to say who yet, just to preserve the fun of that for the fans,” added executive producer Melissa Bernstein.

What?

Below is the AMC  official synopsis for season four:

“In Better Call Saul‘s fourth season, Chuck’s death catalyses Jimmy McGill’s transformation into Saul Goodman. In the wake of his loss, Jimmy takes steps into the criminal world that will put his future as a lawyer – and his relationship with Kim – in jeopardy.

“Chuck’s death deeply affects former colleagues Howard and Kim as well, putting the two of them once again on opposite sides of a battle sparked by the Brothers McGill. Meanwhile, Mike Ehrmantraut takes a more active role as Madrigal Electromotive’s newest (and most thorough) security consultant.

“It’s a volatile time to be in Gus Fring’s employ, as Hector’s collapse sends shock waves throughout the Albuquerque underworld and throws the cartel into chaos – tearing apart both Gus and Nacho’s well-laid plans. While Gus changes course, Nacho finds himself in the crosshairs of deadly forces.”

We can’t wait!

It’s been a while since the finale of Breaking Bad left us as satisfied as we were desperate for more. In memory of the show’s brilliance, here is a list of our Top 5 most jaw-dropping, stomach churning, edge-of-the-seat, fist-pumping moments that the series brought us. Spoilers alert.

5. Jesse shoots Gale. Season 3, Episode 13. “Full Measure.”

This moment is intense for so many reasons. By this point, we already know that Walt is simply not a nice guy but we’re still rooting for him anyway. We like Gale and we don’t want him to die and we know that Jesse isn’t really a murderer, but we know that for Walt to survive, Jesse has to get to Gale in time and pull the trigger. The moment is fuelled with a mixture of conflicted emotions and this is why it is so memorable.

4. “Say my name.” Season 5, Episode 7. “Say my Name.”

It’s hard to believe that the Walt at the start of this episode is the same man as the feeble, anxious chemistry teacher we saw a few seasons back. This moment is a signifying reminder that the man we see is no longer Walt. He has become Heisenberg.

3. The train heist. Season 5, Episode 5. “Dead Freight.”

This entire episode had us on the edge of our seat. Our eyes were glued to the screen hoping they would pull off the heist and then just as our heart rate returns to normal, the kid on his bicycle returns from his spider collecting. My jaw hasn’t recovered from the drop since.

2. Walt saves Jesse. Season 5, Episode 16. “Felina.”

Does anything need to be said about this moment? It’s perfect. And Jesse gets to take revenge on Todd, so that’s great too.

1. Gus Fring dies. Season 4, Episode 13. “Face Off.”

It’s hard to pick number one, but I can’t think of a cooler moment in any TV show, ever. Heisenberg and Hector form an unlikely allegiance to the one man that Hector hates more than Walt. For a minute there we thought Gus had found a way, but then we realize the episode title is for once unambiguous. This moment is satisfying on so many levels and Gus keeps his calm and collected composure right up until his last breath.

What’s your favorite BB moment? Let us know in the comments.
