John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place and Netflix’s Bird Box were both great movies that were very similar in theme. Both were set in a post-apocalyptic world where the majority of the population has been wiped out. While in one world the characters must navigate their survival in silence, in the other they must navigate their survival blind. To make them even more similar, both feature a pregnant protagonist and pose the question of the difference between living and merely surviving for the sake of existence.

Consequently, we’ve decided to compare the two by putting them up against each other in three major categories.

Strongest Performance:

Winner: A Quiet Place

Reasoning: Although Sandra Bullock was fantastic in Bird Box, Emily Blunt’s performance in A Quiet Place had the edge. Both movie stars acted out giving birth in a post-apocalyptic scenario, but Blunt’s delivery of pure fear and pain when trying to go through the pains of labor in silence has got to be the winner. Unsurprisingly, Blunt won a SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for her overall performance in the film.

Scariest Concept:

Winner: Bird Box

Reasoning: This was a very close one, and you might well disagree with our reasoning here. To begin with, the chance of survival seems less likely in A Quiet Place given that the creatures can easily get in the house and will kill you instantly if you make even the slightest sound. The entity in Bird Box, meanwhile, cannot enter the home, so if you block the windows, you can use your vision freely. This would be fine if it weren’t for the crazy people running around trying to force everybody’s eyes open. Moreover, the fact that you can’t see the entity means there’s nothing to fight. At least in A Quiet Place they know what they’re running from.

Best Direction:

Winner: A Quiet Place

Reasoning: Although Bird Box was very well directed and was insanely tense and suspenseful, John Krasinski’s direction in A Quiet Place was spectacular. He successfully maintained a feeling of terror and suspense throughout the entire movie and for that reason, his masterpiece comes out on top.

Overall Winner: A Quiet Place

Yes, 2018 is over but that makes now the perfect time to look back at some of the best movies the year brought. Here are the top 10 horror films ranked from best to worst.

Hereditary

What if evil could be inherited? The tale of the haunted house got terrifying again with 2018’s terrifying and unique horror Hereditary.

Bird Box

Apostle

A brutal and bloodthirsty cult tale from Netflix, which didn’t disappoint.

Suspiria

Critics may be divided on this uncompromising remake, but whatever your thoughts might be, this radical re-imagining of Suspiria is bursting with insanity and horror.

Annihilation

Netflix’s surreal and unnerving sci-fi thriller pulls you into an uncomfortable world and gets under your skin.

Mandy

Nicholas Cage’s most recent movie appearance was surprisingly gripping with a healthy dose of violence and bloodshed.

Halloween

The Nun

The Nun hardly lives up to some of the other titles on this list but it was still entertaining and some people liked it. Read our harsh review here.

John Krasinski will definitely be involved in the sequel for A Quiet Place.

A Quiet Place was arguably this year’s top thriller, receiving 95% on Rotten TomatoesIt tells the story of a family silently fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic world overrun with blind creatures that hunt by sound.

There have been rumors circulating that Krasinski will not be involved in the sequel, but producer Andrew Form has confirmed that this will not be the case.

“Oh [Krasinski is] definitely involved,” he said to Collider. “We’re lucky on this one. I’ve had movies where the studio says to you, ‘Here’s your date. Let’s go!’ and on this one we’re not rushing anything, which is amazing.

“So we’re gonna take our time, we’re gonna figure out where to go, but there is no rush on it and we’re just starting to talk about it.

“We’re figuring out what everyone’s involvement’s gonna be and what the actual next movie’s gonna be. The first one is so special to us that we really want to take our time with this and not rush anything.”

That’s the good news, but the bad news is that we probably won’t be getting a sequel for quite a while. The upshot of this is that Form is determined to make sure that nothing is rushed and that the movie will be good in its own right.

“It’s easy to rush these and we’ve made movies in the past where we’ve rushed them through and we’ve felt it, and we just don’t wanna do it on this one. We really don’t,” he said.

“We really just wanna take our time and as long as it takes, it takes. It has to be the right story, just like the first one. It just has to be.”

We’re over half way through this year already and the rest of the year will see the premieres of some highly anticipated movies, including the long overdue sequels of Halloween and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Before then, let’s take a moment to appreciate 10 of the best movies to come out in 2018 so far.

Games Night

Competitive couples go head-to-head in a game which gets a little to real too quickly. Funnier than expected.

Avengers: Infinity War

It brings together just about every superhero we’ve seen in the franchise and was the Marvel event of the year. The visual effects and CGI are off the charts and we were on the edge of our seats from start to finish.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The emotional, brutally honest drama was nominated for seven Oscars and is currently rated an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Quiet Place

It is a new shade of horror, taking the action outside of the haunted house and into a post-apocalyptic world. It makes silence sound terrifying.

Hereditary

It was dubbed as this generation’s exorcist and for good reason. Throw away the horror cliche handbook and expect a gripping and thrilling psychological horror show.

Lady Bird

A heartfelt and uplifting coming of age movie with a unique flavour.

The Death of Stalin

A satirical comedy of an entirely different species to Deadpool 2, but really quite brilliant.

Annihilation

A surreal and unsettling sci-fi horror which intrigues you both visually and psychologically.

Deadpool 2

The most ridiculous and hilarious movie of the year so far.

Black Panther

Black Panther took the box office by storm and is considered by many, including Rolling Stone, to be the best movie of the year so far.

John Krasinski’s new horror movie A Quiet Place has officially landed a sequel.

The movie is set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by creatures who hunt by sound. The story revolves around a family of four, starring Emily Blunt as a pregnant mother.

The horror feature has grossed $213 million worldwide and is rated an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on the success of the film alone, it is not surprising that A Quiet Place has bagged itself a sequel.

Initially, A Quiet Place was intended to be a sequel of Cloverfield. Scott Beck, one of the creators behind the original conception of the film, told Slash Film:

“That was one of those things that, I guess it crossed our mind and we had spoken to our representatives about that possibility. It was weird timing, though, because when we were writing the script, 10 Cloverfield Lane was at Paramount.”
