Christopher Nolan is going back to the trenches of World War II in his next film and we finally know what it will look like. The first trailer for Oppenheimer arrived and it chronicles the rise and fall of the man described as “the father of the atomic bomb.”

Oppenheimer chronicles the life and times of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, drawing inspiration from the book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film will look back at his time as the head of the Manhattan Project, an undertaking that led to the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II.

Oppenheimer, who famously called himself “the destroyer of worlds”, can be heard wondering how his discovery will reflect on the rest of the human kind in the trailer’s voiceover, saying, “I don’t know if we can be trusted with such a weapon but we have no choice.”

Oppenheimer will be led by the Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy, with Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, and Kenneth Branagh in supporting roles. It will be released on July 21, 2023 by Universal Pictures.
