Charlie Brooker On Black Mirror’s Dark Humor and Learning to Code

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker says that people overlook the “dark humor” of the show and that he had to learn how to code for the Christmas special.

At the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, Brooker told Press Association: “I think it’s often easy for people to overlook the dark humor that is in Black Mirror.”

He then explained that the ideas which make it into the show are more often or not the ones that make him laugh. When the choose-your-own-adventure episode “Bandersnatch” came up, he revealed that he had to learn code in order to create the episode.

“It was like trying to solve a puzzle. It wasn’t a normal writing experience. I literally had to learn to code to write the story treatment,” he said.

“It was a very different process. We knew it was experimental. I was very keen that we try out things in the episode that maybe weren’t even apparent to viewers.”

There is unfortunately still no news on when season 5 will be released but is in the works and is due for release in 2019.
