USA Network decided to renew The Purge, which is based on the popular action-horror film franchise of the same name, for season two. The network revealed its decision after the finale of the first season aired on Tuesday night.

“USA Network is so proud to be the television home for the iconic franchise The Purge,” said Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks for NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, in a statement. “The partnership and creative trust of [executive producer] Jason Blum and everyone at Blumhouse Television and Universal Pictures ensured The Purge‘s successful transition from film to TV — and along with Universal Cable Productions, we look forward to digging even deeper into the mythology in season two.”

The Purge was created by James DeMonaco, who also created and directed the first three movies in the film franchise. DeMonaco wrote several episodes of the series and directed the pilot.

“James DeMonaco has done it again: The propulsive and compelling story he created for season one of The Purge truly resonated with audiences in a significant way,” said Blum. “We are thrilled to embark on season two and can’t wait to bring more of James’ vision to USA and fans of The Purge.”

The Purge television series became an immediate hit for USA Network and currently stands as the network’s highest watched drama with 2.3 million viewers. The show stars Gabriel Chavarria, Hannah Anderson, Lili Simmons and Jessica Garza in the lead roles.

Set in dystopian America, The Purge films and television series revolve around a yearly “Purge” event, during which all crimes become legal. Four movies were released to date, earning $446 million combined at the box office.

Besides the upcoming fourth installment of The Purge franchise, we are also getting a TV show from the franchise in 2018. Although we don’t have many details about the show so far, Jason Blum, head of Blumhouse Productions, which will produce the project, recently shared some updates in an interview with the Den of Geek.

“We’re working on kind of exploring what it’s like to live the rest of the year in a world where you can kill someone on a certain day of the year,” said Blum. “It definitely makes you think twice if you’re driving and you give someone the finger or something like that. So we’re definitely thinking about different things that might happen in a society where killing was legal 12 hours a year. There are a lot of things that you don’t think about. You could commit a murder, and then somehow make it seem like it happened on Purge Night and get away with it. There are a lot of things that you can do with that idea, and we’re trying to think of all those different situations in that world.”

Franchise creator James DeMonaco is believed to be heavily involved in The Purge TV show as well.

Original The Purge came out of nowhere in 2013 and took smashed the box office. Ok, not exactly smashed, but it earned close to $90 million at the box office, compared to $3 million budget, which is quite impressive. After the success of the first movie, two sequels followed, with each one being more commercially successful than the other. The fourth installment in the franchise titled The Purge: The Island, will be a prequel and is scheduled for release at some point in 2018. Also, this movie will be the first one that won’t be directed by James DeMonaco.
