]]>What was superb about this character twist was that it’s the reverse of what we usually expect. Instead of it being revealed that Abigail is indeed a ghost, or Luke’s imaginary friend, it is a revealed in the shocking moment of her death that she has been alive the whole time.
The moment it is revealed that Violet has been dead since her “failed” suicide attempt at the start of the season is shocking every time. Her own shock when she sees her body makes the whole thing even more unsettling.
Throughout the whole episode, we believe that Kenny is a teen guilty of something we’ve all done. It’s horrible watching him jump through hoops to protect his reputation, and we are rooting for him the entire time. Of course, that all changes when we realize what he has really done.
When Spike is introduced in the second season, he’s the baddest vampire on the block. In season four, he gets a chip put in his head that stops him from harming any living things. Then in season five, he realizes he is in love with Buffy – the vampire slayer he spent the whole of season two plotting to kill.
In season one, Lorna seems to be one of the sanest, sweetest prisoners at Litchfield. In her backstory episode, we’re expecting her to be imprisoned unfairly like some of the other characters. This couldn’t be further from the truth. As it turns out, Lorna is one of the biggest pyschos in there, only now we love her even more.

]]>The streaming platform has calculated which of their original series have the highest watch-time per session this year. This basically means they have worked out which shows people are most guilty of binge-watching in a shamefully low quantity of sessions.
Surprisingly, Insatiable made the cut in spite of its shocking reviews. It turns out that we love our Netflix shows so much, we’re even quick to finish the shows we hate. Also on the list were some of our personal favorites, including The Haunting of Hill House and the sixth season of Orange Is The New Black. Stealing the top spot though was On My Block, which viewers completed in impressively little time.

All of the above series are available for streaming on Netflix now.

]]>Starring Drew Barrymore, Santa Clarita Diet revives the zombie concept and transforms it into something hilariously modern and original.
The drama series plucks its sinister characters from literary works from the 1800s. It’s captivating and very stylish.
True Blood is a raunchy and daring dark fantasy horror show about some very sexy vampires.
Supernatural follows two brothers as they hunt sinister and frightening monsters. It’s in its 14th season right now, so if you want a horror show that will keep you occupied for months, Supernatural might be a good choice.
Hannibal contains some incredibly gruesome murders, which are presented to us so artistically that we forget how horrible what we are looking at really is.
Stranger Things was the show everyone was raving about when it first came to Netflix in 2016. It’s incredibly well written and has some very creepy moments.
OK, it technically started in the 90’s, but Buffy ran into the 2000’s and was so forward thinking and relevant that it deserves to be on the list. Plus, it’s got everything from demons to vampires, ghosts and werewolves. Oh, and Buffy’s best friend is a witch.
American Horror Story is the pinnacle of TV horror. It spans over eight seasons, each telling a different story, and it contains monsters and murders more frightening then most of the movies we’ve seen.
The horror drama follows survivors of the zombie apocalypse and is one of the most popular shows on television right now.
Netflix’s latest horror series is so frightening that many didn’t make it past the first few episodes. If you’re feeling brave, it’s absolutely worth the watch.

]]>We care about the characters
Introducing the Crane family as children immediately creates empathy in the audience. Consequently, when we see the characters as adults, we already have a vested interest in the characters and care what happens to them. Genuinely caring what happens to a show’s characters means there is more at stake and the storyline becomes all the more gripping and powerful as a result.
It doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares
Yes, there are occasionally jump scares, but they are pulled off remarkably well. Unlike a lot of recent Hollywood horror productions, the show does not rely on cheap scares to entertain. Instead, the series sustains a looming feeling of horror and suspense and times its jumpy moments perfectly.
It pays enormous attention to detail
A lot of the show’s brilliance lies in the attention to detail. Throughout several scenes, there is something in the background. Be it an unnerving shadow or a ghostly face, there’s often… something. This creates the feeling of omnipresent haunting and keeps you permanently on edge.
The characters are incredibly crafted
Not only is it easy to empathize with the characters, it’s easy to believe them too. Each member of the Crane family is carefully carved out with a unique set of qualities that make them all the more credible. There are no moments when a character’s reaction seems far-fetched. Even when we don’t understand their actions, we know it’s because we could never understand the severity of the trauma and haunting they have been through.
It doesn’t need a sequel
An admirable feature of the series is the way it wrapped up perfectly. It didn’t leave us hanging, it didn’t leave important questions unanswered and it didn’t leave a tantalizing twist at the end in case they want to make a sequel. Each intricate story line came together in the stunning season finale, removing the need for a followup season entirely. In fact, a sequel could only stand to damage the achievement of the show.

]]>The post Stephen King and Michael Flannagan to Join Forces for “The Shining” Sequel appeared first on Entertainment For Us.
]]>Doctor Sleep is King’s sequel to the terrifying story of the Torrance family, The Shining. The sequel will be based on the grownup version of traumatized Danny Torrance, who is to be played by Ewan McGregor.
Stephen King is the master of fictional horror and after the huge success of The Haunting of Hill House, it’s fair to say that director Michael Flannagan is a master of the genre too. Putting King’s story together with Flannagan’s directional skills is a recipe for genius.
Still, the director is treading carefully when it comes to making the adaptation. He has expressed his concerns about protecting The Shining.
“There is no version of the world where I am trying not to acknowledge one of the greatest films ever made. There’s no upside in shying away from that reality,” he said.
“At the same time, this is not The Shining. It’s its own story and in a very specific way,” he continued. “If you’ve read the book, you know exactly why it’s so different, but it’s quite a tightrope that we’re walking, I think.”
“I’m having a great time doing it. I’m just going to get the movie out and then turn off the internet for two weeks and see how it all goes.”
Stephen King is presumably pleased to learn that the task of bringing his novel Doctor Sleep is in the hands of Mike Flannagan. He recently praised the director on Twitter.
King tweeted: “THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, revised and remodelled by Mike Flanagan. I don’t usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great. Close to a work of genius, really. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure.”
The movie adaptation of Doctor Sleep will be in cinemas January 2020.

]]>The post “The Haunting of Hill House” Episode 1 Review appeared first on Entertainment For Us.
]]>The latest spooky addition to Netflix is the TV adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 Gothic horror novel, The Haunting of Hill House. Before the series aired, there was already plenty of hype, and it is amazingly ranked 100% on Rotten Tomatoes following its debut on Friday night. Naturally, I was therefore skeptical when I sat down to watch the first episode, not wanting to set my expectations too high and end up disappointed.
This time round, however, my skepticism was completely unnecessary. I was completely blown away by the first episode and am ready to binge the rest of the series this weekend.
The Haunting of Hill House sustains not only archetypal horror but the feeling of sincere terror. It relies not on cheap jump scares (although be warned, when there are jump scares, hold tight) but a recurring feeling of the creeps. I emphasize this because it is not just that the episode contains creepy moments, although there are indeed many. Instead, the overall atmosphere of the show successfully gets under your skin from the start and makes you feel on edge from the first scene to the very last minute.
As well as being admirably frightening, there is already a strong sense of gripping drama building. The characters are versatile and compelling, and we care from the start what happens to them.
The five siblings have suffered something deeply traumatic in Hill House, although it is not apparent exactly what went down yet, and it seems they are all dealing with it in their own way. The youngest, Luke, grew out of his imaginary friends and became hooked on heroin. His twin sister, Nell, also suffers deeply from the events that occurred, while Theo engages in meaningless sexual activities, Steven writes, and Shirley has become hardened and the family’s rock.
The only criticism that could be said of this episode is that it is a little tricky to keep up with all the characters, but they are all so deeply interesting and well-crafted that it is worth paying the extra attention.
Overall, The Haunting of Hill House is the horror series we have all been waiting for. It contains all the ingredients for a successful TV series as well as introducing a far more serious and disturbing feeling of sustained horror and uneasiness that more high-paced shows like American Horror Story lack.
5/5
