There is no denying that Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining is a masterpiece. It is chilling from start to finish and remains one of the most iconic horror movies of all time. There are a lot of rumors about what went on behind the scenes, but what was life really like on set?

The film took five years to make and although sources offer mixed reports, filming likely took the best part of a year. At the time he was cast, Danny Lloyd was just five-years-old. To protect him from psychological trauma, Kubrick did not tell Lloyd the storyline of the film. He told Danny that the film he was making was a drama and hid all of the horrific and frightening scenes from him. In the scene where his on-screen mother runs with Danny in his arms, it is actually a dummy. Lloyd was sixteen when he saw the movie for the first time.

Unfortunately, life on set was less pleasant for Shelly Duvall, who played Jack’s wife. There have many reports that Kubrick was exceptionally hard on her during filming. In the infamous “Here’s Johnny” scene where Wendy swings a bat at Jack, it took 127 takes to get right. In the scene that made the final cut, Duvall’s exhaustion and horror are genuine. She once said: “From May until October I was really in and out of ill health because the stress of the role was so great. Stanley pushed me and prodded me further than I’ve ever been pushed before. It’s the most difficult role I’ve ever had to play.”

And do you remember child actresses Lisa and Louise Burns who played the creepy twins? They were never meant to be cast, but Kubrick decided that twins were way creepier than one young girl. For their birthday, the director gave the twins vials of fake blood. It was the same fake blood that they had to lie in following their brutal on-screen murder.

Unfortunately, despite all of the effort that went into making sure the entire cast gave it their all, Stephen King was not happy with the movie. He describes it as a “disappointment” and thinks that Jack Nicholson was all wrong for the role. Ironically, King may be one of the only horror fanatics who didn’t like the movie.

If you’re wondering why we have only selected the top five Stephen King adaptations, it is because there are over 40 in total. Here’s the best of the best, ranked from worst to best.

5. Carrie (1976)

The original Carrie adaptation delivers all the horror of high school followed by all of the terror and suspense of a murder. Brian De Palma masterfully lures us into the mind of a paranoid teen in this sympathetic thriller.

4. IT (2017)

The IT remake is the highest-grossing horror movie of all time. The colorful blockbuster is tense, funny, and full of our favorite horror tropes. The sequel fell short of perfection but 2017’s IT was one of the most entertaining movies released that year.

3. The Green Mile

People often forget that the heart-breaking story of The Green Mile was originally written by Stephen King. There’s a reason that even the “toughest” macho men admit to crying over this masterpiece.

2. The Shining

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining was so flawless that nobody has bothered trying to remake it since. Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of a man losing his mind is so convincing that the movie remains terrifying on the second or third rewatch.

1. The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption has spent years as the highest-rated movie on IMDB. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman give stellar performances and the film is considered by even the harshest critics as flawless from start to finish.

The first official trailer for The Shinning sequel Doctor Sleep finally introduces us to an adult Danny Torrance.

In the screen adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 horror novel and sequel to The Shinning, Danny (played by Ewan McGregor), Jack Nicholson’s on-screen son, is battling a drinking problem and the emergence of strange powers.

“When I was a kid, I bumped into these things. I don’t know about magic. I always called it the shining,” he says in the trailer.

“We pick up Dan in New Jersey and in the throes of his alcoholism, kind of right at rock bottom is where we meet him,” writer-director Mike Flanagan said. “He’s nomadic, he’s violent, he’s crawled so far into a bottle that there doesn’t seem to be an easy way out.”

“It’s really kind of a strange experience to meet your hero kind at their most awful version of themselves. Structurally, it’s really fascinating, from a writing point of view. You kind of feel like, ‘This is our hero, ladies and gentlemen, you’re going to meet him puking.’ So, yeah, we pick up Dan at the lowest point of his life,” Flanagan added.

“More than anything, this is a story about his redemption and trying to avoid repeating the same fate that his father had to deal with, outside of the hotel, just with his own addiction.”

The clip features iconic Overlook Hotel moments, including the old woman in the bathtub, the Grady twins in the hallway and the blood tidal wave.

The feature also stars Carl Lumbly, Zahn McLarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe, and Cliff Curtis.

Doctor Sleep hits theaters November 8.

Hulu is developing a fantasy series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Eyes of the Dragon.

The streaming service is making its first venture into the world of Stephen King, bringing his 1984 novel to the small screen.

King wrote the novel for his daughter Naomi. It tells the story of two boys who are next in line to rule the realm of Delain after the death of their dragon-slaying father.

Lego Batman Movie writer, Ghrahame-Smith, penned the pilot. Smith and his KatzSmith Productions partner David Katzenberg will serve as executive producers. The duo recently produced the film adaptation of King’s It.

“I am so excited to be working in the world of Stephen King with Hulu, which has such a terrific track record with Stephen King adaptations,” Grahame-Smith told Deadline. “The goal for this series is to feel unlike any Stephen King adaptation before, with this rich underlying source material, and the only true fantasy book he wrote that has kings and swords and princesses. We will honor the spirit of the book and the legacy.”

The project follows a line of forthcoming adaptations of King’s works, including Pet Sematary, and It: Chapter Two.

It seems like another of Stephen King’s literary works is coming to the big screen. According to Deadline, King’s short story Rest Stop is being developed as a movie by Legendary.

Alex Ross Perry (Golden Exists) is set to direct and write the feature which has been described as a “propulsive cat and mouse thriller that follows the twisted journey of two women after a fateful encounter at a highway rest stop.”

According to the description, the film adaptation of Rest Stop might differ a lot from the source material which features just one main protagonist who is a male. These might not be the only changes Perry makes to the original story, but we will have to wait and see for the movie to come out in order to find this out.

Rest Stop was first published in 2003 in Esquire magazine and won National Magazine Award for Fiction a year later. The story was later included in Stephen King’s 2008 collection Just After Sunset.

Several other adaptations of King’s works are slated to be released in the near future including the highly anticipated It: Chapter Two and Doctor Sleep, the sequel to 1980’s cult horror The Shining.

Odessa Young will play Frannie Goldsmith, “a pregnant young woman navigating a strange new world, who also has the foresight to recognize that there is evil lurking beyond the Dark Man.”
