Although Orange Is the New Black is ending on Netflix with its upcoming seventh season, this might not be the last time we see this prison dramedy. Earlier this week, a report surfaced that the show’s producers at Lionsgate Television are in early stages of developing a sequel to the original show.

This was now confirmed by Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs, who said that they would talk with the Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan about a “potential sequel.”

“We’re really proud of the long run that Orange Is the New Black had,” Beggs told reporters on Thursday. “It remains one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. We’re ending on a high note. Keep in mind we own that series and will be distributing it for years to come. We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with Jenji about a potential sequel.”

The idea of Orange Is the New Black sequel or spinoff isn’t something new, considering the fact that show’s executive producer Tara Herrmann told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year that there were some discussions about the continuation of the show’s story. According to Herrmann, potential ideas included Broadway production, or following couples Larry Bloom (Jason Biggs) and Polly Harper (Maria Dizzia) or Cal and Carol Chapman (Deborah Rush).

Based on Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name, Orange Is the New Black premiered on Netflix in 2013 focusing on the experiences of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) during her stay in a minimum-security women’s federal prison. The show received critical acclaim and managed to win three Emmy Awards during its run.

Despite keeping the popularity among the audience and critics, the show was canceled by Netflix in October with streaming service giant announcing that season seven of Orange Is the New Black, which will premiere in early 2019, will also be its last.

Netflix decided to pull the plug on its comedy-drama Orange Is the New Black, announcing that the series will come to an end after season seven. The series’ cast members decided to give the news to the fans themselves via a Twitter video.

“After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison,” said series creator Jenji Kohan in a statement. “I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but fade to black.

The season seven of the series is set to premiere in summer of 2019.

“During the production of Season 1, everyone involved with Orange Is The New Black felt like we knew a special secret we couldn’t wait to share with the world. Since then, we have laughed, cried, raged, and roared with the women of Litchfield, and every moment spent with them felt like borrowed time — too good to last forever,” said VP of Original Content for Netflix Cindy Holland in a statement.

“We will be sad to say goodbye, but we will definitely be going out on a high. We are grateful to Jenji Kohan and her groundbreaking vision; to her supremely talented team of writers and producers; and to a once-in-a-lifetime cast and crew for creating a truly special work of art that has inspired conversations and connected audiences around the world.”

Orange Is the New Black premiered in 2013, revolving around Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a woman who gets sentenced to spend 15 months in a minimum-security women’s federal prison. The show immediately became a hit with both the audience and critics and stands as the most watched Netflix’s original series. The enthusiasm for the show, however, started dropping, which probably caused the decision to end it.

Besides Schilling, the cast of Orange Is the New Black also includes Kate Mulgrew, Laura Prepon, Laverne Cox, Dascha Polanco, Taryn Manning, Yael Stone, Aduba, Lea DeLaria, Adrienne C. Moore, Elizabeth Rodriguez Michael Harney, and Nick Sandow.
